I can't take this anymore... I see one thing on my laptop screen but when I print it out, i can't tell where her hair starts or stops...  Please CC & PS all you can.....

I am trying to get a nice blk & white out of this pic.... It just comes out too dark and all the shadows, highlights, etc.. is lost...

Any steps or suggestion.... Please Tell me if I need me to upload the RAW image first or a better (high resolution) of the JPEG...

Your MacBook definitely need to be calibrated if you can see where the hair starts and stop because I can't tell on my monitor. The only part of the picture with any type of detail is the face. The hair, the shadows and the clothes all blend together as one big black mass. Your brightness and contrast adjustments are probably way off.

Have you calibrated your MacBook display? If not, go to System Preferences -> Displays.
Click on Color, then Calibrate. When the new window pops up click on Expert Mode and continue. Follow the instructions on each screen. When you get to the gamma - choose 2.2. For whitw point choose native or 6500 degrees kelvin. Try that initially to see if it makes a difference.

Get a huey. USB rocks, you can unplug it and use for all your machines, so like $75 and you are good to go.

Well.....

I did this and then got a calibrator. I was very surprised (shocked) at the difference even in the shading that showed up in the UI in places. Eye calibration like this is basically a crap shoot and really not much worth the time. There is a huge variation from individual to individual in ability to discern differences.

Really, if you are going to be doing photographic work on a computer, the display has to be hardware calibrated regularily.

Guess I got a good eye then - used built-in calibration & then spyder -> pretty close. :)

Actually just lucky or it wasn't out much to begin with.

There was a study someone did (can't find the link) that shows how much calibration varies even between attempts by the same person.

Yep. Tried it once myself (before getting the Optix XR Pro).
Three calibration runs (by eye). Three differnt profiles.
Also: I could not get my two monitors to match. The Monaco can....
