I have a 1DMkII and have recently bought some 4GB CF cards.

Problem is the writing time to the CF from the buffer is dramatically slower with the 4GB vs the 2GB Card.
With a test of approx 20 frames the 2GB writes in approx 8 Seconds vs 20+ secs for the 4Gb Card

The 2 Gb card is Sandisk Ultra II whilst I have tested both 4Gb Ultra II and Kingston Ultimate(133x) with the sames slow results

Does anyone have any clues

thanks

Mike

Did you format it in camera?

I think it is too much of a coincidence that both 4Gb brands are slow and about the same speed. I think it is camera related

Same ISO in both experiments?

I've got Extreme III and Extreme IV cards. There is about a one third speed difference in clearing the buffer between the two, and even a greater speed difference when reading the card with the sandisk firewire reader.

I'm curious as well.

No problems with the 8GB extreme III in mine (bought from adorama)

mdane: if you haven't already, format it in your computer, then put it in the mkII and try the burst again.

Thanks for the replies
Tests were done approx 1 minute apart with same ISO, focal length, subject etc
I will try formatting in PC and see but it is a mystery

thanks

MIke
you are not alone
I have both 2gb and 4gb cards from mymemory.co.uk
they are both said to be 133x speed
yet the 4gb is much slower in my Mark II
I have an old 1gb Ultra 2 and I can fire of a burst of 40 and its cleared almost instantly same for the 2gb cards above
but with the 4gb if I am shooting the football and there is a goal and I have fired off a good few frames for the goal sequence and then the celebrations I quite often get the busy sign and have to wait
I am getting a 4gb Ultra II so will see what happens then

2 x Canon 1D Mark II, & 40D
Canon 400mm 2.8L Mark II:lol:
Canon 70-200mm 2.8L 50mm 1.8Sigma 15-30mm.

Thanks saggy9999

I dont understand it
All cards are legit from the Australian distributor and all brands of 4Gb have the same slow performance

I have sent off a help request to the Canon CPS people in Australia and hopefully thay can help

By the way, what is the 120-300 Sigma like?

regards from OZ

Mike

Check this site out. He does several comparisons of CF card speed in different cameras.

Based on what I've read, I'm going with 2 Gig cards for my 1DIIn.
