It made things quite a bit faster/more reliable then?

a simple yes

tim you can use an application like Belarc Advisor to try and recognize the license keys. Oddly the only company that has give me problems with reissuing a license key is Adobe. Microsoft has been very accommodating.

Thanks for the link Mr T.

I've narrowed the problem down a little more - it only seems to happen now when I double click on files within windows explorer - and mainly JPG files. I'm tempted to just put in another hard drive, copy the entire system drive to it, and reinstall windows... but i'll have to wait a couple of months until I have time to mess around. I have 6 wedding albums to do this month and next month.

Thanks for all the help, if anyone recognizes the problem i'm all ears! Or all eyes...

Oh boy. I just had the same problems after burning a CD with some JPEG shots. I hope it is just a fluke.

guessing you ran

ad-aware w/ the latest updates (hit start select customize scan within archives, and seach for all low risk threats)

spybot w/ updates
http://www.download.com …10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1 (external link)

if both comes out clean
download "hi-jack this" after download rename the file other than hijackthis.exe (soemthing like analyze.exe) click do a system scan and save logfile.. then post your log or PM me your log
