Which photographer or photography style do you like?

Yesterday I was sat talking with a photography student about different photographers.

Finn Costello was mentioned. So was Ross Halfin. Ross has managed to do the unthinkable. He made Duff McCagan look **** hot!

I think both are amazing, their style inspires me.

But I have to say I mostly admire Annie Liebovitz. I have a penchant for black and white photography and she really nails it. No matter what genre of photography she does her images are just simply stunning. Composition, lighting, mood. She has got to be my biggest inspiration.

As for style, I like old school nitty gritty, grainy, loads of noise b&w. Think CBGB's back in the 70's.

Noise/grain done right just adds to the image and gives it a whole different dimension.

Why don't people do that kind of photography anymore?

I know he's supposed to be a complete arsehole, but yep for me is has to be "Gross Halfwit / Donut", Ross Halfin - I remember when I started reading Kerrang at about the age of 14 and his shots always stood out from everyone else's - and they still do - they always seemed so clear - which I loved. The only downer I have on him is that he never shot Marillion in the 80's when they were huge - Ray Palmer always seemed to do most of their pics.

I really like Annie Liebovitz's early work for her ability to become part of the scene. She developed a level of comfort with her subjects that allowed her to get shots that no one else could. I feel much the same way about Charles Peterson's early stuff. I suppose I'm really not into 'performing arts' so much...in the sense of the drama and spectacle of the stage show. I prefer photographers that capture the weird sort of reality that is life as a musician...a more photojournalistic style I suppose.

annie is able to work with the subject AND the location to produce stunning images. i love her stuff in the mississippi delta.
speaking of which, she is going to be in atlanta tonight for the opening of a new exhibit. too bad i don't have an extra $750 to go meet her. i am excited about the new exhibit which looks different than her faces of rock (or whatever that last one was) - that one was amazing.

anyway, back on topic, i am a big fan of danny clinch also. http://www.dannyclinch​.com - check out that first picture of the boss in his portfolio for that grainy b/w effect. i had the pleasure of shooting next to him at a festival once. he shot the whole time with the hasselblad medium format.

Truely a master of the environmental portrait. Man, it would be intimidating/humbling to shoot alongside a guy like that.

I for one think Kalles style kicks ass big time!

Norman Seeff. One of the few Photography books I bought was 'Sessions". Very nice. Also gives a bit of a "look behind the screens"...

I totally agree with you on that. I was thinking more about photographers outside this forum (at least as far as we know, right?)

Oh, by the way - nice cover shot in the After Dark magazine

For me, Annie's work isn't that spectacular. There has to be a celebrity photographer. By default. Her demeanor, contacts and entourage got here where she is. I've seen better shooters here on POTN. They're just not hooked up.

If there was a style that I would say I like, someone who photographically has some good skills (lighting, composition, creativity etc)

i stopped working for them ages ago when they messed me around too much id be interested to know if its mine as they do still sometimes use my images with out say so, but because its only a lil eh hem magazine im not botherd. but i shall try and find one to have a look, cheers.
