Hello everyone,

I purchased a G5 not too long ago (in the middle of April), and I have been very happy with it so far. This is my first digital camera, after playing with some basic 2MP Kodaks at work. I also played with a Nikon 5700, but so far I have found the G5 to be a little more user friendly.

This looks like a great site and I hope to contribute as much as I can learn from it. Photography has always been a hobby of mine, until now, I have not had the time or means to pursue it.

Welcome,

You'll find a lot of extremely helpful people on this site without the bickering and egos of other places on the net. I've been participating for a while, and have learned an incredible amount.

Have fun

Hello,
Welcome to the forum, this place can be really funny at times, and there's lots of useful information as well. Its addictive too, I always feel compelled to check in here every few days (or every day, to tell you the truth, work's been really quiet lately!). Hope to see some of your pictures, its always good to see what other people can do with the same camera as your own.

Hi Paul

Welcome. It's nice to see a fellow engineer join ! I've only recently joined ,also. The people here are really friendly and alot of them really know the craft. Beginners like us can do alot worse than listening to the discussions posted here.

Have fun and learn.

Gary.

RUN!!! DON"T LOOK BACK!!

These guys will slowly but surely convince you of the shortcomings of your camera and within 6 months you will have decided to liquidate your 401K for new camera equipment.

I am convinced that everyone here is a Canon employee or a serious stockholder.

Wow, thanks for the welcome. I am quickly finding that I need to buy more accessories (it seems like every week there is something else to buy). So far I've bought a tripod, a camera bag, a memory card, and a few camera/photography books. I am looking at purchasing another memory card, an additional battery and perhaps a charger, and some of the add-on lenses. I am also thinking that I may need to upgrade my computer because it is having a hard time processing my images.

I plan to try and teach myself as much as possible before my family vacation to Costa Rica (in the middle of July).

As far as picture posting goes, I've taken really amateur shots. I'm sure you could tell they were with the camera auto settings and nowhere near the quality of some of the images that people have posted here! But, I am still learning and could probably use some constructive criticism, so maybe I will post some of the better ones (IMHO). Where do you link photos from? I have an Imagestation account, but cross-linking has been a problem with some of the other forums that I have visited. I guess I should do a search as well to see.

quickben, I see from your profile that you're a Gas-Turbine Engineer. I am a Mechanical Engineer and I do design and consulting for Chilled Water Plants, Power Generation, and Boiler Plants. I haven't done much work with turbines, but I think we have a few new projects with Combustion Turbines and HRSGs (Heat Recovery Steam Generators). I know I'm going on and on, but it is pretty fascinating stuff to me. There are some really cool photos to be had in my industry, so hopefully I can use site visits to capture some really cool photos.

So far I am loving the camera, and its capabilities still far exceed my understanding. Once I get to the point where I want to do more than my camera is capable of, I am sure that I will upgrade to the next best thing, like maybe a 8-megapixel Powershot or even a digital SLR. I figured the G5 was a good starting point for a novice who wants to learn a lot more about photography without getting overwhelmed.

For online photo hosting, get a pbase account. You get a lot of space for the money and the style of your galleries can be as personalized as you want or need.
Go to Pbase.com, get a trial account (30 days) and see if you like it. While your there go into the search option, by camera, and find the G5. This will show you tons of samples being done by other G5 owners around the world.
Enjoy,
Jaxon

Welcome to this forum. We are evil. I will admit that at the forefront. We will cause you to spend money. Lots of it. Then you will start browsing the Digital EOS forums, and those guys are even worse.

Expect that if you spend at least a good amount of time on this forum, you'll spend another $200-600 minimum for your "new obsession". That seems to be average with a Lensmate Adapter, 420EX Flash, Hoya Filters, Extra Compact Flash Cards, Image Storage Solutions, Batteries, and a flashclip.

In any case, please post some pictures from your new camera. I too started my digital trek with a G series camera and can credit this board to both inspiring me to grow as a photographer, and to providing me eggheads to hang out with.

Enjoy and Welcome Again,
