Wow, thanks for the welcome. I am quickly finding that I need to buy more accessories (it seems like every week there is something else to buy). So far I've bought a tripod, a camera bag, a memory card, and a few camera/photography books. I am looking at purchasing another memory card, an additional battery and perhaps a charger, and some of the add-on lenses. I am also thinking that I may need to upgrade my computer because it is having a hard time processing my images.
I plan to try and teach myself as much as possible before my family vacation to Costa Rica (in the middle of July).
As far as picture posting goes, I've taken really amateur shots. I'm sure you could tell they were with the camera auto settings and nowhere near the quality of some of the images that people have posted here! But, I am still learning and could probably use some constructive criticism, so maybe I will post some of the better ones (IMHO). Where do you link photos from? I have an Imagestation account, but cross-linking has been a problem with some of the other forums that I have visited. I guess I should do a search as well to see.
quickben, I see from your profile that you're a Gas-Turbine Engineer. I am a Mechanical Engineer and I do design and consulting for Chilled Water Plants, Power Generation, and Boiler Plants. I haven't done much work with turbines, but I think we have a few new projects with Combustion Turbines and HRSGs (Heat Recovery Steam Generators). I know I'm going on and on, but it is pretty fascinating stuff to me. There are some really cool photos to be had in my industry, so hopefully I can use site visits to capture some really cool photos.
So far I am loving the camera, and its capabilities still far exceed my understanding. Once I get to the point where I want to do more than my camera is capable of, I am sure that I will upgrade to the next best thing, like maybe a 8-megapixel Powershot or even a digital SLR. I figured the G5 was a good starting point for a novice who wants to learn a lot more about photography without getting overwhelmed.
