went to a different park from my usual haunt... this one's a neighborhood park in a rather well-to-do little town called Medina, about 10 miles from where i live. i'd never seen a kingfisher there, but spotted this little guy fly across a pond, so i wandered around the shore and lo and behold, there he was, perched in a willow tree over a small brook. he actually let me get within about 30 feet of him, which is amazing... the closest i'd been able to get till now was about 30 YARDS! i snapped a dozen or so pictures, then got greedy and tried to get even closer. he decided'd been generous enough, though, and flew away...

Some of the best pictures of the Kingfisher I've seen Rocky. I've seen a couple in the last few years, but as a kid, I remember them hanging out over the river where we use to swim. There might have been ten or twelve kids splashing in the water and he would dive right in when we stirred up something. Not just one bird, several up and down a mile of the river, people walking by, dogs, canoes in the water. Not sure what happened, but they sure seem more skittish now.

thanks, everyone! i was absolutely thrilled to get that close to one of these elusive little fellas... i've been trying for a couple of years to get a decent, print-worthy shot of one, but up till now, had never managed to get nearly close enough.
