5 After 2 years trying, finally got a shot at one of the neighborhood Cardinals. Just missed the male. Got this shot of the female, but it was very overcast and near dusk...not conditions that make the 100-400 happy.

These are pretty good. Do you have feeders out? I've put feeders in spots I can shoot from my window, then I stuck some old dead branches into the ground to lean over near the feeders or just seeds on the gorund. The birds will usually land on the sticks first, then go to the seeds, but I shoot them while on the sticks. :)

Thank you for the tips. Our yard has been a work in progress the last couple years (built an addition to the garage 2 years ago...kind of messed things up until now). We're adding feeders this year, we have a relatively small lot with no trees or bushes at the moment (planning to change that over the next few months too). Our neighbors over the wood fence directly behind us have many feeders out and a large tree (the Sparrow pictures were taken from our yard into the part of their tree that hangs over our yard). Even without the feeders or trees in our yard, we still get Sparrows, House Finches, Goldfinches, Hummers, Cardinals (had the dog with me instead of the camera yesterday when 6 of them were all hanging around the wooden fence and the trees with great lighting and within 10 yards of me:cry:), Red Wing Blackbirds, Swallows, an occasional Woodpecker, Blue Jay, and others. There's also a Hawk or Falcon of some type (I haven't been able to spot it other than a blur yet).

I see your from Wisconsin too, what part? You should put feeders out now, cause sometimes it takes time for the birds to find them. They never did find mine, for 3 weeks, until I put some seeds on a board out in the open where they could see them. After that, it's been a steady parade. No Orioles yet though. :)

We're on the east coast, in Manitowoc. We're kind of waiting on the feeders because of the ongoing yard project. We're doing it a bit at a time as $$$ allows. Within a month or so, we'll be putting in a tree and some other landscaping so I'm afraid to get the birds too used to our feeders, then have all the distraction of the project mess it all up, so we may wait until the cover (trees/bushes) is established and then set up the feeders early next spring. I'll have to remember the "seeds on a board" trick, that sounds like a great idea to help them find the feeders.

One of these days, we'd like to get to Woodland Dunes, a local nature preserve that does a lot for Saw-Whet Owls and others. They had an article in the local paper that they've had some White Pelicans passing through this year, I had no idea they came through this way. They would be fun to photograph.

Back288 nice shots.

Great to have another Wisconsin birder on the forum. Keep an eye out for Rose Breasted Grosbeaks, White-Crowned Sparrows, and White-Throated Sparrows.

Canonloader and myself have already spotted them this spring so im sure they are around Manitowoc.

Yup, we get them here. They go way up into Canada. Here's one I shot last winter.

And here they are coming back this spring.

Thanks for the heads-up EVOL, I'll keep an eye out for them, the neighbors' several feeders have been across the fence from our yard for years, so they get a lot of traffic from various species year round.

Mitch, beautiful shots of the White Pelicans (even in winter yet!), I never knew they were around here. I've seen many Pelicans in Florida and down south but not here.
