Does anyone ever use the "Picture Styles"? Do they change anything that can't be dealt with in the Raw images?

You can apply pictures styles using software (ex. adobe camrea raw). But if don't want to post process your pictures, you can use them directly from the camera.
I use "clear" from time to time, mostly when i shoot products from a shop window :)

None of them alter the raw data so the only relevance of them to raw files is that if you use Canon software (DPP, ImageBrowser, ZoomBrowser) then the picture styles are used as defaults though they can be change. I think other raw processing programs ignores them.

But the picture styles are applied to the LCD preview image though, and it is from this the histogram is generated. So I use the Landscape style as it keeps the brightness, contrast, and saturation at 0 so the histogram should be as close as possible to the neutral raw data being recorded. I like to have the sharpness though as the small JPGs, used for the preview image, are very soft otherwise.

Michael.

EXIF is available inside all my photos, though bribes are still recommended anyway.

I like that you can apply the picture style to the raw file in pp with the canon software, as i usually shoot raw and small fine, with a picture style sometimes preset. It means that when i pp the images i get the option of starting from scratch with the raw file or getting a large version of the jpeg from the raw file (if that makes sense).

I believe "neutral" picture style has no adjustments where as "landscape" picture style adjusts the colors/sharpness/saturation which can affect the histogram slightly since even if you shoot RAW the LCD image for chimping is based on the JPEG version of the shot and the picture style will affect that.

Some of the alterations offered by Picture Styles alter the colour rendition in ways that aren't going to be initially easy to achieve in PP through other means. Once you determine by experiment what settings give the effects it will be easier to recreate. However you can apply any picture styles in DPP and avoid all that if you want those effects.
