I was mad as a hornet over a missed shot of some critter up in a tree due to traffic and the fact that there was no where to pull over. I passed this little guy several times and every time I got on the spot there was a car behind me... GRRRR ... I left unhappy and moved on. I was going to places I had never been before and heard the cry of a Killdeer. To my surprise I was able to actually park within 15 feet of a pair ... here are the shots:

The female calling:

The female was actually trying to build a nest:

And her other half:

These ware all taken witth the Canon 1D at ISO 400
I used my 300 2.8 with the 2XII handheld out the car window.

Very nice Eric. They seem to be everywhere now all of a sudden. How do you tell them apart? :)

I carry an old towel on the seat and put the camera on that when I'm driving, then whip the towel over the window sill when I stop and rest the tripod mount on the towel. I've got it down to about 3 seconds.

Good shots Eric! Got close enough for good detail. I stayed in all weekend. I need to get out soon and shoot!

As far as shooting out the window of the car it all depends on what side i am shooting out of and where I am as to what I do... For these shots I did hold the hood of the lens up against the door frame. I also have a Kirk window mount though, i did not have it though... I also just hand hold and shoot when I have to.

Thanks for all the compliments!!!

Their contrasty colours make this bird a good one to photograph as they always stand out in a shot. I have gotten extemely close ups shots from inside a car.
