I guess you could file it under "alternative", although it defies the common definition of that term.

Upbeat, literate nerd rock? I don't know.

They did the theme for Malcolm in the Middle, some stuff for Homestar Runner and a ton of other stuff, in addition to their regular albums, of which there are a plethora.

Got it! Similar thing to Sugarland (country genre) with two principals (used to be three) but they also had their own band for recording and some touring. Were there others with them at this event?

Yes, it was a "full band" show. I got a few nice shots of their guitarist, but the drummer and bassist were positioned such that not even a mediocre shot would've been possible.

And why not shoot in portrail orientation once in a while?

Yeah, the microphone he used while playing the accordion ruined a lot of really great shots. The one I posted (that last one) doesn't bother me so much because you can tell that he's actually addressing the mic, rather than some of the others where he's backed off and just playing, and there's this giant mic and stand needlessly in the foreground... My mobility at this show was limited and I was basically stuck right underneath them.

I disagree on the centralization issue - I don't think it's an automatic fault, or inherently bad-looking. Especially when you've got a single, relatively close, dramatically isolated subject... It would just be increasing a black field one way or another. I could do it in PP if I really cared.

As for shooting in portrait, it's something I haven't gotten used to yet. Everything I shoot in portrait orientation ends up looking like garbage to me. I don't know why.

where was this show? i didn't realize this band was still kicking it around. it does bring back some good memories of jr high school

i think the first two are a tad soft. and #4 has just a bit too much green. maybe wb could help that.

In Rochester, NY. I also discovered them around Jr. high age. I haven't gotten into all of their newer albums, but they've still written their fair share of classics. I get out to see them once every year or so.

The green one (possibly my favorite) is green because of the stage lighting on that particular song. The WB is spot on - compare the blue lights on top of the keyboard in the green shot with the ones in the shot above. They're accurately rendered. In fact, it probably represents the best exposure results I've ever gotten on a "single color saturation" type shot.

They could be sharpened a bit for web however, depending on taste...

They might be 'accurate', but certainly not the best exposure: Green channel is totally blown... There is no detail whatsoever in the side of the face...
I prefer 'pleasing' over 'accurate' for this type of work, and I think that is what was referred to.
