G3 - USB Cable - How Long?

I would like to mount my camera to the bird feeder and then run a USB cable to the computer. That way I was thinking I could activate the shutter with the computer and get some close ups. Will this work? How long can the USB cable be? Will a standard USB cable do the trick?

Thanks

It is my understanding that there is a max length of 15 feet without a USB repeater. so if you wanted to go 30 feet, you would need two 15 ftto cables and a repeater between them.

However, my understanding may not be on the money, I have yet to test it. I will be testing this later this month in setting up an observatory where we need to run 45 feet of cable to go from the computer to the CCD camera on the telescope...

I can let you know then.

Yes, you can use cables with a total length much longer than 15 ft with the repeater cables.

I have used a total length of about 40 feet (including the supplied camera cable) with good success.

Can't offer a definitive answer as to exactly what the maximum length is.

Search the web for USB cables and you should find many sites selling 15 ft cables with the repeater attached.

Having used 3x45 feet USB cables with repeaters I have obtained some very nice photos, the only problem is anticipation of af the birds actions and the time it takes to transfer the data back and forward to my PC as you cannot use continueous mode with the USB cable.
I am also using a 45 foot air release with adaptor for the G3 and in continueous mode I am getting good results although I am only a novice at photography it is goog fun experimenting. Have fun.

Roundeldog:
Can you offer a little more info about the air release? Where did you get it? How does it attach? etc...

Consider using an adapter and a polarizing or sky filter ... against possible acidic contaminations fo your camera

Best regards,
Andy

I have an adapter that fits over the conversion lens adapter so that when the air release is pressed the pin activates the camera button. The link will give you some idea of the air release, numerous air releases can just be joined together to meet your requirements, Unfortunately I do not know of a way to post you a photograph with the adapter and air release connected up.

But where to you stick it in? Is G3 different than G5? There are no threads in the trigger button (sorry, don't know the correct word in English). ?

The adapter attached to the conversion lens adapter has a thread.

I see how the air release works, but it looks like an aditional piece/adaptor is needed to go from the threaded end on the air release to the shutter button on the camera.
What is this adaptor (refered to in the quote above) and where can I find one?

Yeah, I finally understand what Roundeldog has said all the time. Where's THAT adapter?

BTW has anyone dared to pry that trigger button loose and see what's underneath? I'd love to be able to connect an ordinary cable release or, even better, screw on a better button.

I have posted a photograph of the adapter attached to the G3 it was taken to show the maker the extra length of the threaded arm required for the G3, the maker from Slovania no longer makes these adapters but Speed graphic have a velcro adapter.
