Yesterday afternoon, I was also happy to spot a few black skimmers. They fly so gracefully while skimming the water for food. I wonder if they ever catch their lower beak on kelp or a sunken branch and crash. Their beaks are so odd fitting that they kinda look fake.

(All shots taken with a canon 20d, canon 400mm f5.6. Post processing with photoshop CS2 and neat image. Exif data intact.)

4) Finally! I got a picture of a black skimmer skimming.

Very nice. I use to watch these late in the day when I lived in Miami. :)

Thanks all. These guys skim the ocean surface for small fish and crustaceans. The amazing thing is that they are mostly nocturnal and often do this at night. I don't know how they don't crash into a wave or two since they are flying so low to the water.

Very nice, this is one of the weirdest looking birds but so unbelievably graceful in flight. Pics #3 and #4 are my favourites!:)

Serious underbite, poor guys! But it serves them well, their fishing technique is working, funny as it is to look at :)

Great series, Hung! It must be difficult to get the exposure right for the Black Skimmers. Definitely a case where I'd try manual, but I see you used Av and you got great results :)

Where did you find them?

Thanks again. Yes I too have a tough time getting the exposure right with black/white birds. I don't have much experience with manual settings yet, but I am learning. I took these shots at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. I went there this past weekend and the shooting was fast and furious. There are alot of migratory birds making their way back and that place is a very popular pit stop it seems.
