Starting this Thursday May 17 and going through July 16, Canon will be offering "instant" rebates on 14 lenses (retailer will simply discount the lens automatically for you off their selling price):

70-200 f2.8 IS $100
100-400 f4.5-5.6 IS $100
85 f1.2 MK2 $100

70-300 f4-5.6 DO IS $75
24-70 f2.8 $75
400 f5.6 $75
180 f3.5 Macro $75
70-200 f4 IS $75

70-200 f4 $50
17-55 f2.8 $50
17-40 f4 $50

28 f1.8 $25
50 f1.4 $25
60 f2.8 Macro $25

No bodies will have rebates. This information was confirmed with a reputable Canon dealer who was reading the ad over the phone to me.

***This is for USA***

UPDATE: Confirmed (again) from a DGRIN link:

This change is great, and I hope it's the ONLY kind of rebates that Canon will offer from now on. Perhaps the change came about because of so many customer complaints with the mail-in rebate program?

Hmmmmm... Curious to know if these "instant rebates" apply to online sites line B&H or Adorama... In other words, do the online prices for these 14 lenses include the instant rebate? Curious?

Since this is an official Canon USA Rebate Offer, every legitimate Canon dealer should honor the "instant" rebate. So whatever their normal selling price is, they should give you the rebate discount on top of it.

I participated for both 2x and 3x rebates, and both times were horrible nightmares. Uh uh, I'd much rather deal with such instant rebates even if it means less money. I'd rather live longer. ;)

Isn't the 100-400mm IS USM considered a supertele? Or are they considered superteles if it's 500mm or more?

If it isn't over $3k it isn't a supertele IMO.

I'd say the only currently produced are 300 2.8, 400 f2.8, 400 f4, 500 f4, 600 f4

canon agrees, except they throw the 400 f5.6 in there too :p
