Hi everyone,

As the title explains, I plugged in my Rebel XTi to my CRT TV (via yellow composite video cable that came with camera) and nothing displays. I double checked the setting on both the camera side (set to NTSC since I'm in North America) and the TV side (composite video input). Nothing shows up on the TV and on the camera's LCD screen. I also followed the directions in the XTi's users manual to no avail. On the cable, there is another plug but it's colored black. I tried that one instead of the yellow video plug and that didnt' work either.

Can anyone shed light on what I could be doing wrong? And "yes", I did turn on both the TV and camera!!! Thanks for your help!!!

Is it blank even after you've taken a picture with the camera?

BTW, are you sure that the cable you used came with the camera. I thought the EOS cameras only had video and no audio. If your cable has a black plug, too, then that's an audio/video cable instead of a plain video cable which only has the yellow plug like the one that came with my 1D and 30D.

[Edit: but thinking about it some more, I guess the cable shouldn't make a different in this case.]

Try connecting the black plug instead of the yellow plug. The LCD screen is usually blank unless you are viewing something or going through the menu so try doing one of those things. The video should come up then.

Hi PacAce...

The cable is a 3mm plug on one end (plugs into the XTi) and the other end has two plugs... One is colored yellow and the other is black... I assumed that the yellow stood for video, hence me plugging that into the video-in on my TV...

Both the LCD screen on the camera and the TV are blank when connected... Once I remove the connection from either end, the LCD screen turns on and the camera shows the image I've taken...

I changed it up and connected the black plug (instead of the yellow plug) into my video-in on my TV... Same thing happens... No images on both the camera's LCD and television...

Anyone else wanna chime in and do a bit of troubleshooting for me... Thanks in advance... And thanks PacAce for your help! I appreciate it....

Yellow is video and black is mono audio (or left channel). Usually you just have to find the right input on the television using 'tv/vid' or 'source' or 'input'.

Hi Rowdy...

I made sure I plugged it into my AV1 port and set the TV to receive any input from the AV1 port... Still nothing... I switched it to AV2 and plugged the yellow plug into AV2's video input and still got nothing... Thanks for your suggestions!!

edit: I also tried it on two other TV's we have here at home... Both did the same thing as the original TV... For what it's worth, the other two TV's were a Vizio 42" Plasma and a Sony 60" Projection LCD... So I covered all three TV technology formats...

I only have the XT model which came only with the video in ,yellow jack. One thing that happened to me was my old tv had a remote with a "game" setting on it,when I review pics from the XT I must put the tv into game mode. Sorry I can't be of anymore help but I'm totally techno challenged, good luck.

Thanks for giving me that option to look into, conbu... I know the TV has different visual settings, but I can't recall one of them being a "game" setting... Nonetheless, I'll look into it... Thanks a bunch!

Your funny mirage... As I noted in the OP, I did set it at NTSC and not PAL since I'm located in North America... Thanks for the suggestion though... Much appreciated!!!

Try pushing the "playback" button on the back of the camera while everything is on and connected.

I can say your camera is outputting something if the lcd no longer displays it normal information.

I've not had any problems with my XT showing on the tv .. did you turn your TV to the video setting? and plug the yellow end of the cable in to the video in jack and the other end in to the camera?

That's all I can think of to suggest .. good luck

You are using the wrong cord. The headphone style plug is unique and the one you have won't work.

I even copied this pic from an ebay auction of the XTi

The OP mentioned using the cable that came with the camera ... so shouldn't be any problem there.

Sounds like something is brock ... maybe the cable is frayed inside or something?

If you can pick up u 3.5mm to dual RCA cable/adapter, try both the red and white plugs in your TV's video in and if neither work, I would suspect the camera itself ...
