Whats the sharpest most colorful lens? Which of the L series zoom or prime is the winner? for doing shots of people. Or do you get a ziess lens with a converter for the sharpest best color out there? I am looking at shooting at 50mm 85mm and 135mm so this can be achieved by a zoom or a couple primes... whats the best to get? or are you wasting your time with the canon body and thats why people step up to a hassel?

Just a little curious as to what the end all be all would be in the profession of model photography and something to work towards getting whilst just snappin away with what i have now for a couple years.

P.S. im sure this might have been asked before and im sure there is no ONE best lens but just wanting to get ideas on what to keep an eye out for in the future.

I bought the 70-200 2.8L IS USM because it seems to be the standard lens alot of fellows use i sold 3 other lenses to get it ;) im thinking of snagging the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM but I hesitate because im sure as soon as i buy ti canon will release a version II that has IS.. so im kinda waiting.. OR would one prime be a better purchase if im just doing modeling that has a lower f stop?

EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM ( 1.6 crop puts it out to about 135mm )
EF 50mm f/1.2L USM ( puts it out to about 85mm )

Or should i look for an older L lens they dont make anymore?

The 5D and the 24-70L are an oft-used combination. With a crop cam, the 35L might be a good choice.

Another vote for 35L on a crop camera.

the Canon EF 35mm F1.4 L?
hmm that does sound nice it would push me out to 50mm but when you shoot a full body doesnt it distort a tad bit? i thought you had to push out to 135mm to get TRUE undistorted body shots? I could be wrong and prolly am ;)
PLUS im waiting till canon puts out an updated 5D and 35mm would give me some distortion on full body shots no?

I'd say 3 element zeiss tessar.

Seriously though - as long as it's a prime, you won't see any differences in color.

hmm id hate to ask how much that zeiss costs ;)

and thats an interesting point you bring up... so you are saying a prime lens has better or different color from a zoom? and all prime lenses are going to give you about the same brightness?

I'd say lighting and photographers skill are more important....
That being said: On a crop body, 35 would be a bit short, 85 a bit long (for head & shoulders portrait).
60mm EF-s Macro or, if you want to spend a lot: 50/1.2L

Why medium format? More resolution (up to 39 Mp), less DoF, different sensor.
If you've got to ask, chances are, you don't need it.

Many fashion/glamour shooters rely solely on the 24-70mm f/2.8L and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lenses on a full frame body. Even with a 30D, you should consider the focal length more than the effective viewing angle. That is, evaluate the 50mm as a 50mm with the viewing angle of an 80mm lens.

The 85mm f/1.2L II makes for a pleasing telephoto effect, while the 50mm f/1.2L is a rather boring focal length for portraits. Definitely a lot of background blur, but the background doesn't blow away as with a telephoto lens. In this respect, the 70-200mm is at times preferable over the 85mm f/1.2L II as one can zoom to 200mm and shoot with a more pronounced telephoto effect.

I use both (85 f/1.2L and 70-200 f/2.8L) - see the photo post above. Often the 85 f/1.2 is preferable to the zoom because of the background blur and bokeh obtainable with this lens, but you're quite right in that the 70-200 f2.8 is more versatile for this type of photography.
