I didn't know where to put this so it's here. Feel free to move if incorrectly posted.

I made an action scriptto do all the auto adjustment and a few other things I do to my photos. The only problem is getting the who thing to run by itself. All I want it to do is open the file, make the changes, save it over the original, and move on to the next one.

The problem arises when it goes to save the file. It always asks me if I want to save it and at what quality. How do I get this screen to not appear and just have it save? I clicked the "override action 'save as' commands but then it doesn't save the pictures after opening them and running the action.

Mike, are you saving the images to a different filefolder?
Have you written a "save as" process into your action?
Can you do a screen save and show us the Automate Batch screen?

Files are staying in the original folder
hmm... no i didn't make a "save as process in the action. Didn't know you could. I'll give that a try.

Mike,
Be sure to save them to a seperate folder, just in case!!!!
You can always delete if you are happy with the results, but it's not possible to recover files that are written over.
PYA on this one>

Try closing and re-opening Photoshop. PS saves new actions when you close the program.
Sometimes, if the action is not too complicated, I just start over from scratch when I want to make changes in the script.
Do "save as", then the jpeg dialoge box will open.

I guess I didn't read this post carefully, and I'm not sure of your question.
Just set the image quality to the highest number, slide the bar all the way to the right.
Should say 12, that quality will be set for all the images processed by the action.

this question was aimed to more general saving, not so much in actions. (kind of a seperate question) How do i make it when I save a photo, the dialogue box opens and the slider is already set to 10 or 12? Right now it opens and it's set to 2 and I have to move the slider. Sometimes I forget to so I wanna change it.

If you want it to run to process an entire directory of files, JPG........

1. Open any file
2. Create new action, record all steps, when you save, select Save As, save the file as JUNK in some meaningless place (in your case, you'll select JPG in the save as type, then be prompted for quality, slide/set to 12, click OK)
3. Halt Action Recording
4. Close the file(s)
5. Select File / Automate / Batch
6. Choose the action, source folder, destination folder
7. IMPORTANT: Checkbox, mid-screen, [X] Override Action Save As Commands
8. Click OK

Then your source directory will be processed to the target directory as expected.

It was step 6 that hung me at first; seems to make no sense in the dialog.

Hope that does the trick, and I hope I got all the steps in for you!

UPDATE: Saw your clarification - Are you asking how to get the action to HALT and wait for you to select the quality and filename?

I think the answer to that is the Save as quality will be the same as when the photo was saved the last time it was saved. My camera saves at level 6, I always have to bump it when I process and save as.

No I do not want it to hault. simply process, save, move on. I'd like to process 200+ photos without having to touch the computer

I don't think he was saying to halt the action during the action, but to halt the action while making the action.
I usually don't stop recording until after I close the file.
He is right about using a separate folder to save to. That way, when creating your action you can try it without commiting the whole batch, or mistakenly destroying an image.
Follow his instructions and it should do what you want.
I can't advise you enough times to save your pictures to a separate folder, although you haven't acknowledged that you will.
Good Luck.

AFAIK, when you use 'save' it saves at the same compression that the file had originally.
If you use 'Save as' it defaults to the last used compression.

If you are working on jpgs, make sure you keep an untouched copy of the file somewhere!
