If one were to buy a Qflash unit does it make sense to keep a 580EX to still use it standalone or in conjunction with the Qflash or sell it and offset a portion of the cost?

Depends on what you're shooting and how you like to light it. One of these days, I want to use the Q off-camera with the 580 for fill but at the moment, the 580 serves as my backup. If this isn't for you, then selling the 580 may be your best best. At the current prices that they're going for, it's tempting.:)

I would hold on to the 580EX. I have a Q Flash and it's a great unit. It's also heavy and requires a flash bracket and battery pack. Sometimes you just don't feel like carrying all that around. I use my 580 for walking around and in my PJ bag. I save the Q flash for more formal settings.

Scott, have you been MIA again, or have I just missed your posts?

Good to see you again.

As to getting rid of the 580, I think it would be a mistake. As stated, the Q is big and heavy, requires a bracket, and just doesn't make a very portable unit for walking around and shooting. It's more for specialty apps. And I WANT one too. No, wait, I NEED one. Especially now that Calickocat's got one.

RichNY,

I have 2 Qflashes, and I still use my 580ex. Three flashes are better than one.

Scott is right. I usauly have my Qflashes on light stands, I have a bracket, but if I have my 70-200 f2.8 L lens on my 1Dmk2 and the Qflash it is bulky and heavy.

Why do I even bother to post on this forum? The answer always is: upgrade to the new expensive item but don't sell what you've already got to offset the price ;)

Seriously, thanks for the input.

Hi richardyoung

You can find some good info on the Qflash in this free DVD.
http://www.qtm.com/DVD/?res_set=&res=1024 (external link)

I love my QFlash, but that does not mean that 580 ex is not a good flash. The Qflash has more power. I like the quality of light it produces. But, I have also taken some great image with my 580 EX. The key to good flash picture may not be the unit itself, but getting the flash off camera, and using a light modifier such as a soft box, umbrella, or bouncing the light of a wall or ceiling.
