Came across an odd thing...

I was working on Jpegs straight from the camera in LR.

Okay, say I've done my basic adjustments in Lightroom. I then want to do a bit of cloning, so I export the image to PS. But, it opens as a *.PSD in PS. No problem, I guess, I would have preferred a Jpeg, but so what? So, I do my editing and then want to get the image back into Lightroom. But I cant figure out how!?
So, anyway, I can't actually remember what I did... except that the image went back into Lightroom and now the image I had been editing in PS was in LR as a PSD, and the original Jpeg image was also there... without the PS editing.

So, how do you export out into PS to edit it, and once the editing is done in PS, import it back into LR avoiding having 2 images, 1 being a PSD and 1 being a Jpeg?

:)

Thanks,

- Matt

I can't figure out why you want a jpg? you would lose quality each time...

there is one way to do this if you really want and that is to save it as the same name as the JPG in the JPG format...

but essentially lightroom is saving you from copying over your original which is good in case you want to go back to the original for some reason...

Cheers,

Matt,

Instead of exporting the file right click on it and choose edit in PS then from the menu choose edit a copy this will create a PSD or TIFF copy of the original capture file which will appear in your LR library and the same folder on HD as the original capture file. The file will then open in PS, once you’ve completed your edits just save and close the file, doing this will update the file in LR with the current edits.

So, then you end up with 2 files, right? A PSD and a Jpeg. So, what then because you dont want 2 files knocking around with 2 different levels of edits, do you?

Yes you do, because you don't want to overwrite the original...

I dont.

Okay, I end up with my original photo, and I have my edited photo - after I have done my PP.

I dont want to have an original, an edited one and a PSD. I just want an original and an Edited. Anyone else know how to do this?

Stack them in LR so you only see the top one but have all 3 versions available.

I won't question your reasons for not wanting more than one version of your pic in LR so...

To do what you want you can, while in LR, right click on the imported orig Jpeg, select SHOW IN EXPLORER, Drag the image into PS, do what you nedd to do to the image, Go to FILE , SAVE and SAVE it. The edits you did in PS will show up in LR (It may take a few seconds but they will appear.

But now your orig is altered and there is no going back.

What I do...When I want to do some work on an image in PS I right click on an image (in LR) choose Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS3 (or whatever version you have) Choose EDIT A COPY WITH LIGHTROOM ADJUSTMENTS in the selection box and check STACK WITH ORIGINAL.

I have chosen to have the file open as a TIFF instead of a PSD but thats your choice. Then do what I need to do in PS click SAVE in PS and that image is now saved in LR, Stacked with the orig and I only have 2 versions. But thats what I do you may do it any way you want. :)

If you don't want the .psd one after saving it out as a .jpeg, just delete it or remove it from the Library.

The idea of LR is to be non-destructive... so they puposely made it difficult to overwrite a file.

Ah... that sounds like what I want. I dont want to edit my original, for obvious reasons, I just dont want 3 copies hanging around with various levels of adjustments. After I've finished my editing process, I just want an edited JPEG, and I obviously want my original. And thats it.

So, I have my original loaded in LR, I then do my edits in LR, then export into PS with my LR adjustments do my PS edits, then pop it back into LR and then export it from there (when I export all the images I've edited in that session, at the end of my editing process), right? So, I will end up with 2 files, wont I? One original, and one edited one.

See, the way my filing system works is that I eventually have 3 images. An original (that is not edited), and edited (with PS and LR adjustments) and a 640px (which is a resized version of the edited one - and for displaying on the web, or emailing).

I'll try this tonight. :)
