I have heard it said that the 70 - 200 lens is too heavy for my 350D is this right or is this just a way to get me to buy a more expensive camera? One guy said it would tear the mount out of my camera if I held the camera and not the lens? Any one got any ideas on that?

You can pretty much count on your cameras lens mount surviving if you held that combo by the camera alone.

I think it was just a ploy to con you into buying another, more expensive camera

What spam said.
It will be absolutely fine. You won't be holding it like that for long though :-)

I have the 70-200 f/4 on my 400 with no issues, though I do have the grip also. It won't tear the mount off your camera. I think he is just jealous. :D

Nothing to worry about, 70-200 f/2.8 IS fits 350D perfectly!

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

I used my 70-200 with my 350D for some time with no problem, but I suggest carrying/holding it by the lens or lens and body, but avoid the body alone.

The 70-200 2.8 IS is a heavy lens. When using the heavier lenses, it's more important to support the lens than the body. However, just supporting the body is not going to destroy your lens mount. And that lens will work wonderfully on the 350D.

What a bunch of malarky! :) It will be fine. What you will find, however, that you'll almost instinctively carry the combo by the lens instead of by the body. It's just handier that way.

Would you routinely mount the CAMERA to a tripod with the 70-200 IS on it? You can put ANY EOS mount lens on your camera but the problem comes when we talk about HANGING the lens from the camera.

If you leave the lens Mounted on a tripod for 2 long you may start getting an error. (this happened to me after being stupid) simply remove the lens and place it back on the camera. As far as leaving the lens dangling from the XT or XTi lol try shooting like that for awhile. You may find pure comfort demands you support the lens a little ;) er my lens wasn't the 2.8 its the 70-200 F4L IS not sure if that's any lighter or what not.

I've mounted a 300mm f/2.8 IS hand holding it most of the time. More recently I've mounted a 400mm f/2.8 IS on it although it spends most of it's time on a monopod.

It all started as a hobby with a Rebel XT & KIT lens. $5K worth of equipment & $0 of income later, all I have to show for it is a harddrive full of pictures and priceless memories!! Yeah it's still worth it :)

You'll probably mount the lens to the tripod, but only because it's more stable and the lens mount is closer to the center of gravity, meaning less drift on the tripod head - but it won't break away the lens from the camera lens mount. That's just silly.

Like others have said nose heavy but do able..Maybe the 70-200 f/4 IS will feel better but I'm not sure if f/4 is what you are working for. I would get a battery pack to give it some weight.
