cookie99,
Kenko tubes work great, however they wont work with EF-s lenses (unless modified). :)

I bought some from the same seller. They're well made and, since they contain no lenses, work just as well as the Canon ones (though they don't work on EF-S lenses).

Thanks folks.

I Know the seller and have always had great service from him in Melbourne, I just wondered about the quality of the tubes and once again you have helped greatly.

Thank you

I've also bought from that same seller and they came fast and worked perfectly.

I don't want to bash these as I know many are happy, but my set (new for a reputable seller) had a very loose fit and weak springs on the release buttons. This resulted in unscheduled lens dismounts, once with a very expensive lens into sand narrowly missing a marshy grave.

After that I got a set of the much more expensive Canon tubes which fit tightly and I live much happier.

I have since heard of other people with the same problem. One had the trick of covering the lens mounts (on the tubes) with sellotape to improve the lock security.

Also happened to me.
Twice I realised that I had managed to inadvertently release the lens.
I am yet to work out if I am doing something stupid or heavy handed to cause this, but I have never had the same problem with my Canon TC , with release lever positioned in a similar place.

they work fine, especially for the price. yes some people have managed to slide their hand across the release button, but as long as you are careful i dont see why you should tons more for canon's tubes.

I'm very happy with my extension tubes. I'm very abusive to my equipment (good thing I have a great personal property insurance company), but haven't had any problems. They practically live on my 100mm macro, but they've done well on the 70-200 for butterfly or dragonfly shots.
My copy seems to fit quite snugly together. Even if the release is accidentally pressed, it would take a good twist to remove the lens or separate the tube set. I haven't had any accidents yet.
Good luck!

Robert

There were two problems compared to the Canon ones that contributed in my case, other respondents have reported the same issues.

a) Weak release button springs
b) Zero lock and unlock torque

The result was any small force on the release buttons and the lens could just rotate a little becoming unlocked. It would then rotate all the way to fall off when is use or being carried.

The original thread is here https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=186161

By contrast the Canon tubes have release button springs that are much stronger and require more lock and unlock barrel torque than the teleconvertors.

Ditto. Didn't know you could modify them, though. Tubes are just tubes, picking a name brand, I'm told, won't make a difference to a casual macro user such as myself.

EDIT: Ok, Look above ^^^^^^^^ holy sugar that could matter!

Quite possibly, there are a few other with the same type of fruit also, but I freely admit that it must be a small minority as so many are happy with the Kenkos.

Really I feel it is worth warning folk, if you don't have to make a noticeable effort twisting the lens on watch out.

I could have sent them back asked for replacements etc but having had my 300 f4 IS just miss dropping in water and instead getting the inside full of sand was enough for me - order the Canons and be done with it. It is just not worth fannying around to save a few pounds with that level of potential loss. ;)

My Kenko tubes are a very tight fit. Never had any problems with them.
