My old CRT just isn't adjustable enough to make effective use of my new calibration spyder, so I would like a new one. I want to stick with a CRT for image quality...........those Lacie flat screens are expensive!

I saw B&H has a Viewsonic graphic monitor for $477. Looks nice, but are there other options? Any other places to buy one from? Thanks!!!

The Samsung 499T is a very good flat screen monitor.

I can't find the Samsung you mention.. it's very hard to find a good CRT these days, they have all but disappeared..

Viewsonic and NEC are about all that's easily available.. (newegg carries some)
I am honestly not sure if you can still buy a new CRT that is as good as todays better LCDs.. as they have disappeared,. now don't get me wrong, I am still convinced that the only LCDs as good as the better AG CRTs of a few years ago are much more costly.. but unfortunately Sony, Hitachi and others seem to have dropped the CRT's all together.

Then again, it's pretty easy to find a good *used* CRT. I bought a LaCie Electron22Blue a while back for next to nothing (about 120 euros)...

I have been looking at too many different monitors ... I should have said Samsung 244T. Samsung has just recently come out with the XL-20 which actually has a color gamut that is 114% of NTSC. that is big news because the color gamut is typically less than half of the NTSC color gamut and even the LaCie is only around 80%.

Where do you go to find a used monitor that you can trust?

Well, there is a downside to wide gamut monitors when you are using them with smaller gamut images (sRGB for instance): The signal from PC/Mac to monitor is 8bpc...
So if you are working with sRGB images on a monitor capable of displaying AdobeRGB, you are effectively worse off then on an sRGB monitor... Have a read here (external link). Quite old, but I'd think it still applies...

That's an LCD monitor, right?

I'm looking for a new monitor too, but I'm not sure my desk could handle the weight. ;)

The only weight lifting I do is 12 ounces at a time with many reps. Maybe Sam can come and help me install it?

I'll check out the article. BTW, most run-of-the-mill monitors don't even come close to covering the full sRGB color gamut. The Samsung LX20 covers the full sRGB color gamut and actually falls somewhere between Adobe RGB and sRGB -- actually closer to the sRGB gamut than the Adobe RGB gamut. I think that their marketing hype says something like "achieves new level in supporting the Adobe RGB color gamut thanks to its asdvanced LED technology..." (it uses high brightness LED's rather than CFL's for the LCD backlighting).

It looks pretty good. I would not recommend their LCD monitors from my personal experience -- very limited menu options, uneven lighting, uneven color without any menu items to correct either. I sure wish that i could get one like my old Sony LCD monitor.

Yes, it is an LCD. You would have to beat me to make me go back to CRT ... I don't care if their color is better. I have a big desk hog Samsung CRT on my other PC and there is no room left for anything else. I think that it weighs around 80 pounds. The desk creaks under the weight.

Not sure if they still make CRT's, but I've been very happy with my LG Flatron ez T910BU CRT monitor for the last three years.

If they still make their CRT's, I think LG is still one of the best to go with. Check 'em out, see what ya think.

This is certainly true, a bit of a crap shoot, but my prized FW900 SONY AG was a steal used compared to the OP of $2500.00!!
