the thing is, i need to be able to use it in a few different ways so let me know if this is possible. first, i want to be able to use it as a spot to shoot light onto my canvas without it affecting the light already hitting the subject (i'm assuming this would be possible by making some kind of tube-like attachment for the front). second, i want to be able to use this as a light source (like a spot) on a model for portrait/figure work, for both painting and photography. thats also why i was concerned about the color temperature. if i was using this just for photography, i wouldn't worry about it. but since i want to be able to use it as a light source while painting, i need it to be accurate.

so, what do you guys thing about a light like that one? would two of them do what i'm looking for or should i look at something else?

It does not exist!!! Name any light source, apart from the daylight fluorescent tubes I had mentioned, that gives daylight color temp. The only thing approaching it might be a hotlight photoflood with blue tint, and I don't think you want to deal with the heat of that source except in dead of winter. Not sure they are even made, still.

OK here are the three 'daylight' source alternatives, using Daylight WB in the camera...

IMAGE: http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i63/wiltonw/IMG_3199s.jpg

And with AWB in the camera...
IMAGE: http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i63/wiltonw/IMG_3139s.jpg

I think it shows that AWB and the use of the 'daylight' fluorescent does result in very similar net result, even though the light sources are, in fact, different from one another in color balance.

You're right on Wilt but I doubt his paint and canvas will have an AWB feature ;)

Interesting. I shoot video and then do pics in music studios and have been lugging Interfit tungsten lights around which are ok but get a bit hot and are a bit difficult to balance with daylight that comes in any windows. Although I've got a flash I really don't like using it prefering to use my lights to create the mood and get the effect I like (tend to have to shoot at ISO 400) so these daylight bulbs look interesting.

:)

You can convert Tungsten (3200 degrees Kelvin) to daylight (5600 degrees Kelvin) with a CTB gel, but it costs 2 stops of light.

There are heaps of types of daylight lighting. HMI gives good output but there is also Flourescent (like Kinoflos) and even LED lighting.

Most of this stuff is pretty expensive though.
