Does anyone know if you can secure the tripod collar to the lens so it can't possibly "rotate" off? Grabbing the tripod collar is a common sense way to handle the lens, and I did that with my Nikkor 300 whose tripod collar couldn't be removed. But one of these days I'm going to do that with the Canon 300 and I'm going to be holding the collar while the lens goes and does something else!

I know that removing the collar reduces weight, and that may well be useful to some users. But the downside of dropping the lens when - and it is only a matter of when, not if the tripod collar inadvertently separates - makes Canon's weight reduction option just stupid!

Geez Canon makes you hold down this button while turning that one to get anything done with a Mark II but this they let the tripod collar separate from the lens with no safety at all! So is there something that can be done?

If you tighten the collar down, or just do not loosen it too much, it cannot fall off = safe to carry the lens by.

Yea I don't think the collar comes off on the 3 other super teles but if the camera is mounted to it it wouldn't go past the cam.

I actually liked the collar on my nikon 70-200 better, as if you loosened the screw all the way, you could remove it without dismounting the lens.

As to the collar coming off the 300, or any lens for that matter, when you don't want it to, seems to me that's the equivalent of dropping your camera. It takes an inattentive assinine move to do something like that.

Here's another question though. When mounted on my RRS ballhead, if I rotate the camera to portrait mode, I feel like a clunk in the collar.

Is that normal?

That clunk is when the three security pins have lined up and the collar can be removed. The collar has moved from its track slightly and there's a resistance (clunk) that you can feel.

You didn't know this did you? The lens and collar are now ready to fall apart. Do you feel asinine, or the victim of bad design?

Actually, I felt asinine when I dropped my camera on a concrete sidewalk in Manhattan a few years back. Cost almost $600 to fix it.

The lens collar on the 70-200 and 100-400 is the exact same design, yet I feel no clunk when twisting that. Why is that?
