So I'm at my friends graduation, and I notice a white whale. I walk up to the guy and just casually ask "70-200 IS or non-IS?" He goes "its a super 12x zoom." I try to explain 70-200 the focal length, as I knew for a fact it was a canon 70-200L. He again responds, "no, its got everything from wide to super zoom." I completely give up and notice it's on a 5D. I say, "nice camera." He goes "it sucks, it doesnt even have a flash."

I walked away.

You ought to have a license test to own an SLR! ;) I have to sell them to complete twonks all day long. Rare to see someone who'll utilise them well, though I do concede that everyone has the right to grow into them and develop...

But licenses for teh win!

Cheers, Dave.

Should have offered him $100 to take his problem off his hands.

I think I would have asked if he wanted to sell it then or even better trade for a p&s so he would have somthing more appropriate for his needs as a camera and lens that nice should not be in the hands of someone who would not appreciate it.

Well at least he didn't get a $60,000+ car and crash it into a wall because it CAN do 160MPH and that would have a flash and a bang.

An executive within my Fortune 200 company knew I shot and wanted to move up from his point and shoot to have a "good camera for a Hawaii trip and maybe shoot his kid's Soccer games. I suggested the Rebel XTi or the new little Nikon. I told him where to go. The next day he let me know that he was told the Nikon D200 would give him more room to grow, so at the last minute he decided to buy that.

Rest of the story - a month later, I asked how his photo's were coming. He said his wife thought the new camera way too heavy.

Actually I kind of find it annoying when another Canon DSLR user comes up to me and asks me all these questions.

For me, it makes for an awkward conversation, and I feel like I am being measured up, you know?

Several months back at beach, this guy comes up to me and it went something like this:

Him: "Hey, is that a 70-200?"
Me: "Yep"
Him: "F4 IS?" (This is when I used to own that lens...)
Me: "Yep"
Him: "What body is that? Is that a 30D?"
Me: "Nope, it's a 5D"
Him: "I have pretty much the same gear as you do in the car but I wouldn't dare bring it out in this sand storm."
Me: "I don't care about the sand storm" (Getting awkard here...)
Him: "OK, have fun"
Me: "OK"

That was useful...

I usually keep to myself when I see someone with a white lens, 2 bodies, flash, tripod, etc...

At the zoo I saw this guy with 2 bodies, one of them attached to a tripod, and a flash. I just had to laugh...

My wife was like "Dont' ever end up looking like that!".

Absolutely sure it wasn't a 28-300L? Has a petal hood like the 70-200 2.8's, too. That would explain the "no, it's got everything from wide to super zoom" part.
