jsut a question!!!
it's almost obvious that for most of us, 10D owners , the shutter will go down after the garanty expires  .
an average of 20000 shots seems so low and disqapointing in a way,
does wnyone know how much it costs to fix/replace a dead shutter? is it possible to extend the canon garanty to prevent extra charges or bad surprises ?
thanks for your help in advance

The 10D is supposedly rated at 50k shutter releases although, as statistics would have it, a few people have reported it going at 20k or so. Although I am a little concerned about this "short" life of the shutter, I'm not going to overly worry myself about it until that day comes, if it should come. I have the EOS Elan IIe which I've had for a couple of years old and I haven't worn it out yet so I don't expect to wear out the 10D either, or at least not for another two or more year.

I do not think that 20,000 releases is in any way indicative of the number to expect..

A small handfull of individuals here (myself included) did arrive at this number.. but that is about three on this forum out of hundreds that have reported such a failure.

There are hundreds of thousands of 10D's out there..

I am sure that the stats would.. if the numbers were available,.. show that the shutters averadge expactancy is well beyond the 20,000 that my camera had.

Just wondering, besides from Pro Photographers, is it really fair to say 20-50K actuations as too low? I know alot of people say that their 10 year old film camera's shutters haven't gone out or need replacements, but do they know how many shutter actuations they have on their film bodies?

Since the price of shooting a 10D, minus the cost of the equipment, is virtually nothing, it's easier to eat up frames as well know how many shutter actuations they've taken.

just a thought.

As explaimed to me by the man in Canon Service in NJ:

Shutter replecement is covered under their "flat fee" repair schedule, which last summer was $250.

They said my D30 nedded it.

And don't forget... if you have an extended warranty, it should be covered under that as well. For me, I'm covered until December of 2007 - whew

Where do you get an extended garanty ? with Canon INC. or any canon dealer or what ? does anyone know any tips about a world wide canon garanty ?
thanks for any tip (while my garanty is still ON)

Well, if you still have the original manufacturer's warranty with at last 90 days left on it you should be able to get it. I don't know if you'd be able to get anything with less than or with no original warranty left. Canon does not offer extended warranties... at least to the best of my knowledge, so you'll have to go to a third party.

I got mine (4 years extended warranty from the date I purchased it) at http://www.warrantybynet.com (external link). The cost, I think was something like $220 USD. You might be able to do better in price. The warranty I have covers everything that is covered by the original manufacturers warranty - except sensor cleanings, which is fine since I do it myself. Basically everything else is covered. If anything, it's piece of mind for me.

thanks Kahfluie,
I checked the website you gave me , unfortenatly it does not cover canada (I'm from vancouver, Canada) but I might find some similar companies over here.
Just a thought : the shutter dies anyways during the first years, 4 to five years at the most, so I really think that EVERY 10D owner should get an extended garanty since it covers it and much more for the same fees if not less, aren't I right?
regards
Khalid

Extended warranties

As little as a few years ago I would have still considered an extended warranty a "scam."

Unfortunately I have to rethink this. Why? Because of shoddy workmanship and poor construction, most everything you buy these days WILL have catastrophic failure. SO now were left with two choices. Throw it away after it breaks and buy another one, or just bend over and take an extended warranty. Its a shame you have to protect yourself as a consumer in this way.

One of my skills is also as a repairman. Unfortunately most consumer items are now NON-REPAIRABLE. Dont believe me? Talk to someone like a TV repairman. He'll talk about the next to impossible to open cases, and the next to impossible to obtain circuit boards, or their prices exceed complete replacement cost. He can only make a living on the "old" stuff.

<<rant off>>

as you mentionned Pete, that's unfortunate, I used to prepare my stuff myself too, but everyone who does must've remarked that nowadays electronics are ïrreperable"in a way , Imean it's almost as expensive to change parts as to get a new item. but the worst thing is : by the time your "let say Camera"cracks down , even if you want to fix it, couple years old cameras wown't have parts in the market anymore ... imagine the rest of the story. the good thing is that prices usually dorp a bit for the same or newer items.... I miss old mecanical immortal bodies
conclusion: let's keep shooting and ignore our cameras funerals day.

And I think that the shutter replacement is around $250-$300USD, so it's a tough decision...

It would perhaps have been better if Canon had included a proper frame counter - and recommended and scheduled a programme of service periods according to age / frame count.

I had a Hassleblad XPan for a while. The manual specifically referenced service periods.
