I recently purchased a new comp and it unfortunatly came with Vista. After downloading pics from a card with the built in card reader, it pulls up a web site from Canon and its a trouble shooting solutions page, but my problem is I dont know what my problem is. Here is the website http://alpha02u.c-wss.com …WWUCA900&menu=DR&TRF=MAIN (external link) I have not installed the software that came with the camara onto the new comp, b/c I planned on using the built in card reader and Adobe.
SO my questions are: Should I run the disks that came with the camara?
What possible downloads am I looking to use from the website above?
Or am I just crazy?
Brenda

Run the disks that came with the camera. It's usually a safe bet.

Anyway, you are looking for Digital Photo Professional, EOS Utility, PhotoStitch and ZoomBrowser EX.

You don’t need that software if you do not want to use it, but to be able to update to Vista, you’ll have to install software that came with your camera first, and then do the upgrade.

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

My guess is that you downloaded some raw files and Vista tried to direct you to the Canon website to download the raw codec for Vista. This would enable you to view raw files, without prior conversion, within Windows Explorer, Photo Gallery etc..

If you intend to connect your camera directly to the PC then you should install the Canon software - either Zoombrowser or EOS Utitlity at a minimum - in order to provide the necessary drivers. The Canon website has the latest Vista compatible software. Make sure you use that and not the older XP stuff.

One very good thing about Vista is that it's not on my machine.

I've upgraded my XPS M1710 laptop and home built media centre PC from MCE 2005 to Vista Ultimate and have been running Vista for a couple of months. There are a few plus points and some definite negatives. I've been tempted to return to MCE 2005 on several occasions but I'm hanging on in there in the hope that I can get used to its foibles and that MS and other suppliers can get their act together and make everything work smoothly.

Pros
====
1. There is supposedly better security in Vista than XP. Let's hope that's true.
2. The Media Center application is definitely better in Vista than MCE 2005, especially for slideshows on an HD panel.
3. Prefetching does seem to work and speeds up application launch.

Cons
====
1. Windows Explorer is slow and cumbersome to operate. File copies can take ages. This has been well documented but there is no known solution.
2. Lots of apps require repeated acknowledgement that an action was intended (a big fault with the security implementation). e.g. Peerguardian, Shareaza, WinRAR, Treesize, RealVNC. There is no way to permanently disable the prompts other than by disabling UAC completely. That is no solution.
3. Drivers are really dodgy. I've had to go to specialist sites to get up to date video drivers installed. My Bluetooth printer has no Vista drivers and never will have. I can use lower grade drivers but lose the Bluetooth connectivity. As my printer is upstairs and my laptop is downstairs that is a bit of a pain.
4. Aero is an utter waste of time. I use the Vista Basic interface. Aero just sucks up juice. I always work in full screen with my apps. I rarely see the desktop and I really don't much care what it looks like. Dreamscene? Hah! Nobody needs gimmicky eye candy. There is certainly no point paying extra for it.
5. If you want to use Remote Desktop you need Vista Business or Ultimate. That is at odds with the needs of the home user, either functionally or in price terms. RD came for free with MCE 2005.
6. If I wanted the sidebar I could have installed Google widgets/gadgets or whatever they are. My screen real estate is precious, even with 1920*1200 resolution to play with. I don't need it to be consumed by a clock and the weather forecast all day long. What a waste of space!
7. My Colorvision Spyder2 monitor profile gets unset in Vista and I have to reapply the profile manually once booting is completed.

The long and the short of it is that Vista is a bit of a pain in the tits to use but hopefully it is more secure. If your machine comes with Vista then fair enough, you may as well accept it and get used to it. If you're still running XP you may as well stay as you are.

im going to be a rebel here and say...

hurrah for mac os x.

hm...as far as your "problem" goes...the solutions page popping up...maybe its a automatic feature that vista has? maybe disable it? I do like the idea of getting rid of Vista and then installing XP Pro.

maybe you should take it one step further, and just move to a mac...lol

i jest.

maybe its like tdodd said...check out getting the RAW codec...

how are you importing them? Through Bridge? or through Windows Explorer? I usually go through Bridge if im not using aperture.

Happy Shooting.

The problem with OSX is that it only runs on Mac hardware (I know you can cobble it onto other stuff but for me it's too much hassle) but the problem with Mac hardware is that Apple do not have a notebook with 1920*1200 resolution and I refuse to accept anything less. Dodgy software I can work around but If I've got pixels missing from my display there's nothing I can do to get them back.

Plus Apple hardware is way overpriced compared to Dell, in my experience. For example, I bought my laptop in January 2007 with mCE 2005 and £11 for the Vista upgrade. The best that Apple could offer cost around £1,800 but without the 1920*1200 resolution I demand. I bought a Dell XPS M1710 with massively superior graphics (Geforce 7950 GTX) and 1920*1200 resolution for £1,435 including 3 years on site NBD warranty. HDD spec was the same. Memory spec was the same. The Mac has a 2.33 GHz processor vs 2.16 but a feeble underclocked X1600 GFX card and lower resolution. I have no idea why the Mac is £400 more. I could have actually bought a Dell for around £1,100 with slightly weaker GFX (still better than the Mac and lower warranty but for a £700 saving that's a great deal.

I installed Vista and it works great with my 30D.
Been running about 2 months and not a single crash. Machine is faster than with XP especially for start up and shutdown.
Also Vista dispays RAW which XP didn't do. I'm one of the few that is very happy with Vista

As I donwload from my camera, and not a card reader,I did install the latest canon software from canon's site, and all is working fine.
Go to the site and find the software yourself and download.

You say you are downloading from a card reader. Does it succesfully copy then fail when you try to open it, or something else?
Is the file RAW or JPG?

It seems a bit ironic that the latest Vista compatible release of DPP on the Canon website has these limitations....

"The following functions are not available on Windows Vista PC.
Trimming tool
Quick check tool
Prints with detailed settings
Contact sheet prints "

But if you run the program in XP SP2 compatibility mode the tools are enabled. I guess the fault here lays with Canon but it does little to reduce the general "pain in the tits" Vista experience.

I have been using Vista for about 2 weeks. As said above, download the latest canon software. I just drag and drop the files off my cards using a card reader into folders and access them using either cs2 or the canon software. Working OK here. NOT sure I like Vista???

I have had Vista Ultimate on my PC since last Nov. We got it from our MSDN at work. I never had any problems with opening files from my camera.
