The following shot was taken with my 100-400. The subject was way too far away (another "dang, this lens is just too short for birding" moment!) and I had to resort to quite a cropping. Is this the best I could have done given that I couldn't have gotten any closer to the bird and the bright morning sky was behind her?

Given the limitations described I think this is a great shot, even with all the cropping you said you did.

Looks like a vulture.

It was so far away that I originally thought it was a hawk. By the way, this vulture had its wing spreaded out for a long time. Very nice for someone taking pictures, but I was wondering what that behavior was about? Anyone knows?

A way of warming itself up, usually on cool days or early mornings.
