Blam- I can confirm from experience, when you get stuff shipped UPS Expedited all you pay when it gets here is GST. When you ship regular post, it takes about 1 week longer and you have to pay brokerage fees and GST

NOOOB WARNING - I am going to stop being such a lurker one of these days....
Canon XTI - Kit Lens, Nifty Fifty, 70-200L F/4 IS, 24-105L F/4 IS and enough questions to annoy anyone!

Bought a 1Ds Mk.II last night. The dollar is awesome right now.

Poor bastards who sell the 1D Mk.III in Canada - The price is just WAAAY off from B&H.

And the Canadian dollar will continue to strengthen relative to the US dollar as their war debt is financed and oil prices rise.

No more Loonie jokes

Folks :)

I'm travelling to Ontario in July to visit family.

I was thinking about purchasing a lens from "sigma for less" and having it shipped to Canada

The lens plus shipping comes to 593 US $

How much duty/customs charge should I expect to pay and how is it usually paid ie, on your doorstep or at the post office ?

It depends how it was shipped.

If you shipped USPS there will be usually around a $5 brokerage fee then expect to pay GST at the door.
If you shipped UPS Ground there will be around a $35(!!) brokerage fee then GST at the door.
If you shipped UPS Expedited or Express there will be no brokerage fee and GST at the door.
(Fedex works the same as UPS from what I understand.)

Since you indicated the post office I'll assume you shipped it USPS, generally it will get delivered like any package and if you're home you can pay the postman, here in Saskatchewan they accept credit card by just writing your number down so I'd assume they do there as well. Otherwise I'm sure you can pay at the post office as well.

In ontario you'll get charged GST and PST, so that's 14% plus 5 bucks for processing.

Alternatively a ticket to new york can be had for 160 or so. ;)

Today buying $100 USD with CDN you pay 107.95.

The price difference must be slamming retailers with the sill price difference that was set at fiscal year start. If we see at par or better before FY08 for Canon Canada, we should see a %10 inequity. It won't be on par since the cost of doing business in Canada is higher (healthcare, taxes)

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional

I finally decided to get rid of my 300 2.8 (nonIS) and purchase a new 300 2.8 with IS. I priced everywhere in Canada, from coast to coast. NO ONE was willing to even come close to B&H price. So Today I pulled the trigger and ordered one to be shipped UPS Expedited. Total Cost Canadian 4223.49 including shipping and brokerage fee. When it arrives I will have to pay GST only on value of lense of 248.97 for a total expenditure of 4472.46 Canadian. That is less than the lowest price I could get on the lens itself without tax or delivery in Canada. When I spoke to B&H they advised they were completely flooded with Canadian orders. They don't expect it to stop anytime soon. Figure out the math...on big glass the savings are anywhere from 1200.00 to 2000.00 Canadian. I just might cancel my 1DMKIII Canadian order and pick one up at B&H for considerably less. Sorry Canadian retailers but most of us work hard for our money to just give it away.

Not siding with Canadian retailers....don't get me wrong....but we must remember that the cost of doing business in a market of 3 million compared to 300 million has gotta have an effect on the end price.:(
I would think thats what we are seeing in pricing at all differeing retail items when compared to here to there.
Thou I must say a certain camera shoulder bag is within $10.00 from a big Canuk chain to B&H..I was really surprised there!!!.:)

Excellent observation. The economy of scale will definitely affect the end price.
B&H only caters to a small percentage of the 300 million you quoted but a large Canadian chain may actually cater to the same number of buyers as B&H thereby having the same scale of economy.

Bless the recently fallen and their family and friends.

Weird we have PST in Saskatchewan too but I've never been charged PST on my orders from B&H.

It's one of those quirks you get jerked around with in ontario... among other things.
