Mmm yeah the dollar is at 94.4 cents currently. :D

No store in Canada is selling the 50mm 1.8 for under $120
Many US stores have it for $70-75.

I'm going to have to go US.

Ordered a Siggy 10-20 from B&H, should be here Wed........499 yankee dollars (or 528 loonies). Henry's sells it for 689.00 loonies.

Who buys from these people??

Buying Sigma in Canada gets you a 7 year warranty though...

It does - and that did make me think........but I still get a one year international warranty. In that time I would think I'd notice any defects and get it into Sigma Canada.

Looking at it another way - would you pay $170 (plus 14% tax) for an extended warranty on a $500 lens?

I did. See sig. the Sigmas can get noisy and I shoot with the fishy in skateparks, water etc. One of the few lenses I've bought new.

isnt it more like 580 loonies with shipping including?

I can get this lens locally for 650 canadian...for the 70$ difference, I'd rather have that warranty and ease of returning it if I get a shibby copy.

Shipping does not cost $50.... well, at least I'm not impatient enough to spend $50 on shipping. UPS Expedited - $30, and that's being split with another person that has some stuff in the order.

You may be able to get the Siggy locally for 650, but I can't. Henry's is the dominant seller in Southwest Ontario, and all the smaller shops (if they even have the stock), usually price everything darned close to theirs. Anywhere from Canada that I could get it for 650 would require shipping to be added.

Regardless, to each his own. The 10-20 that I get, will have the exact same warranty as a Canon lens bought in either the US or Canada, 1 year - that's good enough for me.

We can quibble about whether it's $70 difference or $140 difference, but the fact remains that buying from the US saves you about 10-20%

Price + $30 shipping + exchange (1.0838 right now)+ visa %3 foreign exchange fee = $590.

If I got an email from sigma every year for 6 years asking if I'd like to extend my warranty for $15 for another year I'd bite.

Heck - we're splitting hairs here........but where did you get a exchange rate of 1.0838? www.x-rates.com (external link) is showing 1.0605. And the foreign exchange fee is 2.5%, at least for my visa card.

Anyways, like I said before, to each his own. I'm not a fan of extended warranties, or, in this case, paying a higher price for a longer warranty. I figure if things are going to go bad, it will show up early on.

Cheers

1.08 is pretty close to 1.06

What visa do you have? I have no fee on USD purchases. Their exchange rate is is a little elevated, but it's not a 2.5% difference.

You're new to importing stuff. That is the direct exchange rate. Rates for buying and selling currencies through your bank or visa are NOT reflected in XE's posted rate.

http://www.rbcroyalbank.com …o7Q4/rates/cashrates.html (external link)

These rate above are the cash rates. Visa charges cash rates plus a usual fee of %3. Some Visa cards charge a %2.5 fee on top of the cash rate (or as Doc's %0)

I try this reasoning with CDN sellers often. They see XE as gospel but forget that if I send them $2000 USD for a product, they don't get the same rate when selling the $2000 USD to the bank. You can see the reflected rates for buying and selling above in the link.

Hence my "splitting hairs" comment ;)

I have a CIBC visa, also a Capital One mastercard - both charge a 2.5% "admin" fee for the conversion. If you found a card without this fee, let me know!

the dollar is at .94, so its being sold at ~.92 or less.

yes, you do save. but IMHO, not worth the hassle.

and that 650 is local pick-up. most camera shops will price match as well.
