As for powering it, you can use an inverter as suggested above. If you don't want to go that route, then a smaller laptop 2.5" disk that takes less power could be powered by batteries and would be portable. Since wherever I go, I would have access to a power source or at least a car at the end of a day or two, I figured this would make a good system for me. If you are going on week long hikes in Denali National Park and don't have access to power, then you are SOOL.
