So, I'm in PA this weekend, and have already shot 250 pics today. I plan to shoot a lot more through Monday (got room for about 200 more), so I brought along my camera cable to transfer the pics to my wife's mac. Simple, right? Macs instantly recognize just about anything, right? Well, not exactly. It wants to import using iPhoto, which won't recognize .CR2 files. Naturally. So, I go to canon-usa.com to hunt for EOS Utility for OSX. Do they have it? Yep, there are updaters to versions 1.1.1, 2.0, and 2.0.1. BUT of course I would need to have version 1.0 installed already for the updaters to run. Which I don't, since Macs are supposed to recognize anything and know what to do with it.

So, what I'm asking is, can someone upload the installer for EOS Utility from the Canon software CD? Please? I'd be forever grateful, and also able to shoot unhindered all weekend. Thanks in advance...

Go to http://www.iview-multimedia.com/downloads/ (external link) and download iview media pro. They have a 21 day free trial, not to mention that you may well find that it is worth buying anyway...

Isn't it easier to buy around there a CF card reader for her Mac?

which version of OS X are you using? RAW support is built in on an OS-level, and there are frequent updates to add more cameras... so iPhoto, Preview, and Aperture if you have it should all recognize your files just fine... the 400D is supported.

Alternatively, opening up the Image Capture utility might work better than iPhoto.

It will still import if you don't use iPhoto.

If it annoys you that iPhoto launches then open the application "Image Capture" and turn this off.

By the way iPhoto supports RAW.

My server wouldn't let me upload that file. Sorry.

The above is good info :)

Dowloaded the iView application, and that did the trick. Good thing, too--i definitely would have run out of CF card space in short order!

Yeah, a card reader would've been great except that it was 3am in Cowtown PA (no offense to York, but seriously), and I wouldn't have had time to find a store even once they were open.

OS X version is 10.4....so, Tiger maybe?

Tried Image capture...clicking the app icon causes an icon to pop up in the dock and then instantly disappear. No explanation.

Say all you want about iPhoto supporting RAW, but it certainly wouldn't open any of them! Besides, when importing photos, it seems to like to seriously downgrade the quality

Thanks for the help, everybody :)

Eos Capture needs to be started from within Eos Viewer Utility AFAIK...
Edit: That would be Eos Capture, not Image Capture... :o

Image Capture won't work I think. In the prefs you can set what it should do if a camera is connected, but it doesn't see my 1D2 when connected thru FW...
EVU does see the camera.

Why not just buy another CF card and download the lot when you get home? Seems like much less hassle to me.

Image capture recognized my XTi/400D immediately. I could also open cr2 files with Preview.

Might be a FW vs. USB thing?
Good to know.

I just imported several raw images from my 30D using iPhoto 6. There's nothing wrong with the program - it will import raws from any Canon camera. The file is just that - a raw image. iPhoto does nothing to change it unless you tell it to. What version of iPhoto are you using? What kind of Mac?

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

He might be looking at the JPEG redition of the raw file. Each is kept in a different folder, I think (but even if they're not, there are two separate files), although you can't tell that by just viewing the image in iPhoto.
