I took a couple of shots of these baby House Finches the day before they fedged. There were four crowded in this nest and the 3rd image shows the wreath they built their nest in...amazing camouflage and I looked at the wreath for a few minutes before I located the nest. My niece and nephews are in and out of the house all day and each time the door opens into the house, so does the nest and young ones..but I guess thats part of their routine. After the first year the Wreath was a mess so after they fledged, my sister threw it out and replaced it with a new one. That was OK with the finches as they nested in the new whreath last year and again this year:D

A tougher shoot than I imagined and one shot is with the 200 2.8 and the other with the 100 2.8..while I was standing on a chair....the 3rd image is the wreath on the door and the nest is left of centre on top...If you look really hard you might see the open beak sticking out ...good luck:D

That is amazing, I have finches taking over the mud nests of cliff swallows on the house. That was perfect camouflage. Is it time to change the wreath?

Now that is so cool. I guess this is why they call them House Finches. :)

I can see the babies head in #3. :)

Yes, I can see the baby in the wreath. Isn't that amazing. I guess disturbance level is not a priority for these birds. Thanks for sharing these.

That first one is just fantastic. The DOF with the focus point on the one chick is just perfect, and it would be tough to ask the little baby to give a better pose and expression.

Thanks Dennis and yes it's time to change the wreath. She is getting a new door and doesn't plan to put a wreath on it but is looking somehere else on the house to facilitate them for next year.

And thanks also to Mitch, downywp, Shirley, and exerda:D

Wow, that is fantastic. It never ceases to amaze me the way birds have adapted to human settlements. Beautiful little birds, I wish them well. Nice, sharp shots BTW!

Wow, these guys were well hidden from predators!! House Finches seem to be rather resilliant...my uncle accidentally destroyed one of their nests (and two out of the four babies) while trimming a cedar row. He picked up what was left of the nest and patched it up, put the two surviving babies in and set it up in a different location. The parents continued on and both babies have now fledged successfully.

Wonderful story and photos Gary. There is a mourning dove nest in my cousin's hedge but the door wreath is a better location IMHO. ;)

Great shots. What an unusual place to make a nest. Excellent work as always Gary. :-)

Best regards
