There is this place, a farmer's field, just outside of Bethlehem, PA where an amazing thing happens. There is a depression, a bowl of sorts, in one of the fields and water accumulates in it creating a mud flat/water mix. The ducks, gulls and other shore birds congregate there and it seems that hardly a week goes by with some interesting bird observation being made.

The sad part is that it is looking more and more like that farmland will be sold off for development (a golf course and condos). What a pity.

We stopped by this afternoon and while there were no rarities there, there were many gulls, some killdeer, plovers and sandpipers as well as ducks and ducklings.

I took about 30 or 40 shots of a couple of Least Sandpipers who were feeding on the near shore. They were part of a flock of 50 or more that we saw flying around at one point.

The first three images were at ISO400 because I forgot to change it after the Veery of the morning. The remaining four were at ISO100. I did use fill flash on several of the images as well.

If you got this far, thanks for reading. And thanks for looking.

C&C would be appreciated.

The fourth in the series is definitely my favorite. I really like the contrast between the blue water (reflecting the sky, I presume?) and the sandpiper's plumage.

Thanks for the comments folks. I really appreciate it and am happy that you like the images.

While I like the oof yellow flowers in #1 and #2, I don't think the ISO400 shots came out as well as the ISO100 but then I also used some fill flash on #4,5,6 and 7 so it was a one-two punch. I too like #4 a lot. But I think the series shows a variety of poses, behaviors, etc.

This was another case of taking a few images and then the Sandpiper would come closer so I'd take a few more and then repeat the process.

Thanks again.

Ed, great series. I like #4 too but I also like the last one a lot.

You said you used fill flash but the EXIF says Av mode and speeds of 1/640 or higher. How did you do that?

Never mind. I am sick of this. Canon really needs to hire a person whose mother tongue is English to write their manuals. All this time I thought the custom function for flash was at 1/250 fixed, to get UP TO 1/250sec. And Auto meant of course, everything UNDER 1/250sec. Now I was just playing with sh!t and find I can get high speed sync in AV mode by setting it to Auto. AAARRRRRRGGGGggggggg.......

Which of course answers every question I have ever wasted anyones time with about Fill Flash...

I'm starting over, be back in a month.

Magic. It's amazing what you can do when you don't know what your doing! :D

Anyway, I set the flash for High Speed Sync. According to my handy dandy instruction book "With high speed sync, you can use flash with all shutter speeds. This is convenient when you want to use aperture priority for fill flash portraits." So I took them at face value and set HSS and AV Mode and voila! :D

man, mine says nothing like that. They go the long way around, mentioning Manual Mode and everything but how to set it up for Av Mode.

Anyway, I got it, everything fell into place in my pointy little head and I have just taken 5 or 6 perfectly exposed hi speed sync shots straight into the bright sunlight. Thanks for being the jolt that got me back on track. I owe you a bald eagle and two house wrens. :D
