Morning all,

Was out with the UK's leading Who Tribute band Who's Next last night, second time I've been out with the guys but, first time with the camera (at any gig for that matter) which is what I was always meant to do, although, clambering around the stage did make me think I was meant to be a monkey. Other people got the same impression.

Anyway, here they are:

#1: Jamie rocking away:

Definitely plan on doing this again, hit it off with one of the supports so, that's a formality! Any comments you may have, please leave them for me to read at a more suitable hour, thanks!

Yours, clubbing through the night ... with baby seals,

Owain.

pretty decent set, esp as you say this is yr first go at a concert shoot. 3 and 4 are my fave. 1 is good but the crop is a bit too tight; it would improve if you included the rest of the singer's face on the left. likewise, the windmill townshend move would be better w/ a wider view, so you can see his whole arm, and the guitar neck as well.

I don't see 'first time' being an excuse for anything, if I'm any good, it shouldn't really matter. I've been using a camera for a while now and plenty long enough to know how to focus and compose, changing the application doesn't mean I start over again.

I struggled with being in the right place at the right time for the windmills, that (and the others from a sequence) are the only ones I have from the front. Got quite a lot of wider views of the singer which look quite good but, wanted the selection to show a rock 'n' roll Who tribute act.

Will be shooting with them again I'm sure, at the very least they need to bring Monkey Boy along to hang the sign above the stage! Will try and avoid cutting bits off of the guitarist then, I'm sure he'll be grateful!

IMO experience does help ;)
Nice set. #3 and #4 are good.

Experience helps with things like timing, anticipation and judgement but I don't think first time or not should have any bearing on how the images are seen, no matter how many times you've shot something, you should still be looking critically at them.

Cheers.

well if you don't want people's opinions colored by yr stated gig shooting experience, don't state it.

some of the shots also seem a bit soft, so after looking @ the EXIF, i'd have moved off of ISO 400 to get some faster shutters. also it was a bit odd that every single shot had -1.3 EC dialed down.

Fair point.

Exposure compensation was to try and preserve detail in highlights (which worked on the whole) because shadows are easier to rescue and something even I can deal with, if I lose highlights, I struggle to get them back. With the exposure compensation down, I put the ISO down as well or I'd have ended up with no movement at all, maybe 800 would have been a better compromise, especially on the drummer.
