Hi All,

I am a newbie to this forum, my first post actually. Anyway, I am in the market for a 300D or a (dare I say it) Nikon D70.

I am a Canon supporter all the way though, I just sold my G2 (remember those) and am saving for my new Digital SLR.

I just have one question about the 300D. How many continous shots can you take in sequence before the buffer and writes slow down? On max resolution that is. I heard the D70 can do like 9 before it slows down, is that true?

Well, thanks in advance for your comments.

Cheers

Gear list : Canon Powershot A80, Nikon D70, 18-70mm Kit Lens, Sigma 170-500mm.

I own a 300D and I've played with a D70. The 300D takes 2.5 shots per second with a buffer of 4 shots, so it slows down after 4 shots.

The D70 is a real beast. It just keeps going. Log on to www.dpreview.com (external link) and look at the D70 Review it has a .mp3 of the shutter sounds on burst with a 300D vs. D70.

flash card

It also depend of the speed of your flashcard, if you have a superfast 1gig flashcard, it will not slow down after 4 shots, you would be able to take more continous shot.

Okay, I am just concerend since it seems like the D70 seems to have more features. I really want to go with the Canon though since I aleady have a cool zoom lens for my film Rebel and if I got a Nikon I would have to dump my zoom lens.

Are there any other major differences that anyone knows about?

yes, there are. In terms of image quality the 300D is better. Even Dpreview.com admits that, while they clearly rate the D70 higher due to its functionality. It's for you to decide. Both are excellent cameras. However, if you have very good Canon lenses (L-glass? ;) ) then the choice is simple.

Whenever any kind of debate starts about Nikon this versus Canon that, I try to interject these statements:

Nikon thinks of itself as an optics company. Canon thinks of itself as an electronics company.

Many years ago, the quality of the optics were much more important than the quality of the electronics (which were primitive then). That has changed somewhat by now.

If I were ready to sink $20K into a special lens, then that might be a good debate. For most of us, however, the entire camera package is more important, and that is one hell of a system of electronics.

Yes, I see what you mean. I dont want to start a flam war, but the D70 does have some cool features the 300D does not.

Whew, just got through the review (dpreview) on the D70 and 300D. I must say that the only real sad thing for me was the way the D70 kicked but on the continious shooting. WOW! I wish the 300D could do that as well.

Anyway, I think I will go for the 300D, since I will not have to dump my zoom lens.

If this were a perfect world (for the photographer) you might be able to put a Nikon lens on a Canon body, and vice versa. Alas, that doesn't work.

Fundamentally, once you commit to one brand, you will be there for a long time. It gets very expensive to try to jump back and forth.

I've been in the Canon camp since 1997.

Heard that different-different speed of the CF won't take so much difference when using on specific camera. Since the camera itself have it's own maximum read/write speed, so even using the fastest CF available, the read/write speed is still limited to the camera ability.

So, is it still valid to say that the continuous shoot will not slow down when using fast CF???

regards,

Loekito

The 300D is not meant for speed.... It really depends on what type of photography you're going into. I don't really know much about the D70, but I can't say bad things about Nikon. I owned one of their "prosumer" cameras (CP990, which was pretty darn good at its time, cost $1000), and it served me well, until I lost it.
Now I bought a 300D and am totally happy with it. I'm saving up for Ls now (starting from 70-200mm f2.8L USM :))

Somebody else will chime in here, somebody else who uses that particular camera.

There are a number of variables in the process. Your camera is the one that you have no control over. You can buy faster or slower CF cards, and there is a little difference there. How much is a little? It depends.

You can add another variable with the file type. The camera is going to take longer to buffer and write out a RAW file as compared to a small JPEG file. Many of us shoot only RAW files, so that variable is taken away.

The trick is that once you have invested a few hundred bucks into CF cards, it becomes difficult to get them sped up. You'll have what you have, and you'll make the best of it.

Check out the CF speed tests at:

He just completed a new round with the Sandisk Extreme and Ultra II's, which included the Canon 300D, among others.

I got a 300D a few weeks ago, and I love it BUT if I knew then what I know now (AND if I could afford it) I would have go the 10D instead. Same sensor but more features and better processor. it costs more but if you can afford it i reckon it's worth the extra.

Regards, arum.

Maybe.

If I knew then what I know now, I might have gone for the Nikon D70, instead.
