Well, here's something different for a change: A set I shot in a local café...

All images here (external link)

This was shot on march 30th, before going to Atak to cover a Reggae 'Soundclash' (soon to follow.)
I figured I would need a beer or two, to be able to deal with the 'Soundclash' phenomenon... For those not familiar with that: Lots of whistles, dissing the other party and so on. Not to be enjoyed entirely sober IMO.

Anyway; the café I went to had a band playing, and I decided to grab a few shots, because I saw some very nice expressions passing by....

The band was Jim Wake and Sleepwalker (external link). Former US resident IIRC, now living in the Netherlands.
Nice guy, making nice music.

Lighting was not too good, but I've met worse... I even shot a few images at ISO 1600 and/or stopped down a bit ;)

Camera 1D2, lenses: 20-35L; 28/1.8 and 50/1.4
The ISO 3200 shots have had a bit of Neat Image.

#1: Jim Wake

very nice work as always

#4 has a great facial expression but the guitar head is a bit too distracting for me.

Your usual excellence ... somehow even the magenta looks good!

good set, w/ that signature damkot graininess and gritty feel.

3 could use a bit of crop to get rid of the leftmost guy. 6 looks like he's humming; would have preferred an open mouth moment. 7 is a decent stage shot but doesn't light my pants on fire. 2, 3, and 4 are feeling it.

Now I look at it: I wonder why I didn't ;)

So would I, but I was at f/1.6 ; 1/40, so the one shot I got with open mouth was OoF (and he was looking away a bit too much).

Agree. Lighting was way to 'localised' to get a decent one, and I didn't want to use fill flash...

Thanks.

On a side note, I just came across"Raw PhotoProcessor" (external link) for OSX: Clunky interface, slow, very different conversion on some images, but does some things nicely. It allows 16bpc Lab output for instance. Somehow it does *not* give magenta skintones...

A very Q&D conversion, adjusted L channel a bit to get the face brighter, and add some vignetting, Hue/Sat adjustment layer, then converted to AdobeRGB, channel mixer: Red Channel R=90%, G=10%, resize, Neat Image, Convert to sRGB, save:
No blending exposures whatsoever... The original was a blend of 3 exposures...

Very different, but I think I'm going to look into this one...
