Can someone tell me what the small imperfection on the lens is (just above dragonfly's tail)i ve just noticed it now. checked the outer glass and it is clear as a bell. Surely it cannot be the camera as i only bought it on friday just gone. its on other images also with other lenses too.

Looks like dust on the sensor.

could well just be dust on the sensor - Canon sometimes gives this away free with expensive camera models. If it looks worse at smaller apetures (<F16) then it likely dust or other muck on the sensor. Either get real friendly with your canon repair center or learn to clean it yourself.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

You can verify this by taking a photo of something white - fill the frame - stopped down around f22 and if you see spots on the pic you've got dust.

There are several methods - a search on this forum will be a good place to start. A blower is usually effective for loose dust.

I would start with the Giottos Rocket blower. If that doesn't work, I have tried compressed air, but make sure the can is only 1/4 full and at least 6" away from the sensor and keep it upright. Then give it a few short bursts. It always worked for me.

You state that you had just purchased the camera last Friday, If you purchased the camera from a local dealer I would suggest that you contact them and let the store show you how to clean the sensor. If you purchased the camera from a 'big box store' There passably is someone there to help you, or take the camera back in return. If you made the purchase online the dealer may be of some help.

If the seller cannot or is unwilling to help there are several methods to clean a sensor, many of which have been discussed here.

spots at f6.3! doesn't need to look much further - should be viewable at about 4 'oclock on the sensor...

I was thinking the same thing, it has to be pretty big not to focus through it at F6.3, maybe I'm wrong....but a rocket blower should move that guy right out of the way...
