My current gear is listed in my sig line. I started with the 30D in October and bought the 1D Mark IIN a few months ago and have been using it for shooting hockey with the 70-200 f/2.8 IS and 100-400L. The only other lens I have that works on the camera is my 85 f/1.8 which I love but don't use as frequently as other lenses.

It seems like a waste to be using the 30D for my ultra wide and walk around use when the 1D is more comfortable to shoot with and has better focus. I anticipate selling the 30D and buying a FF camera when the 5D's replacement comes out.

Q. Does it make sense to sell my 17-55 now and purchase a 24-70 or 24-105 for the 1D and give up some wide angle and either IS or aperture just to have the 1D's AF or should I wait until I actually have a FF camera?

Q. Having the 30D is more of a luxury than a need right now. Considering the value will drop next October when it's replacement comes out am I better off selling the 30D, 17-55, and 10-22 now and just buying the 16-35 and 24-X glass now for use on the 1D but loose the convenience of a 2 camera setup.

I see the pros and cons going both ways but just would like to finalize my decision and stop focusing on this issue.

Yeah I would do that.
If you are mostly using your 1D and 30D is just collecting a dust.. I would sell it..
And without your 30D.. there is no farther use for your EF-S lenses..
So get rid of them too..
And get the best gears toward your 1D MKIIn.
That way.. you have maximized every penny that you spent.

The 30D isn't collecting dust. I had some time to shoot some landscape today so I shot with the 30D and 17-55 (as opposed to the 1D and 70-200).

I would have shot some with the 10-22 if I hadn't loaned it to a friend. The 30D is still going to get more use than the 1D when I'm shooting anything but sports with my current config.

But you said it is more luxury than a need, and by the sound of it.. you are definitely considering it as a disaposable gear.
Selling them will give you more than enough fund to buy those lenses that you have mentioned. And it makes perfect sense to me.

It is too bad that 1D series can not use the EF-S lenses..

Sounds like good advice, FWIW.

Does 24mm on the 1D cover about as much as the 17mm on the 30D?

Lenses, I'd swap the EF-S 17-55 for a 24-xxx L to be able to use the 1D more.

Bodies, I can't imagine being on a vacation or on a paid shoot when the 1D goes down somehow without a backup.

Actually no.. it is bit less wide.
17mm on 1.6 crop sensor will give you a roughly 27mm FOV.
24mm on 1.3 crop sensor will give you a roughly 31mm FOV.
That 4mm difference.. to some people it is nothing.. and to some people it is a lot.

That is part of what makes the decision challenging- those are the 4mm I use the most with that lens.

I am not using the body for paid work and I don't view the 30D as a backup camera in as much as a convenience camera where I can swap between cameras rather than doing a lens change. If the 17-55 goes then the only reason to keep the 30D for now would be for the 10-22. Investment wise holding onto the 30D/10-22 combo or replacing it with a 16-35 would be pretty much a wash.
