Happened onto a couple of these guys down by a forest river while I was looking for a kingfisher that frequents the area..

Thanks for posting this, I have never seen one of these so I had to look it up in my Sibley. We have the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker here in Texas. They make round feeding holes while your Red-breasted seem to make square ones, amazing. I like the detail in your shot. Are you in California?

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I'm located in the Puget Sound region of Washington State.
The red-breasted sapsucker is supposedly found up and down the west coast.

That is a TERRIFIC shot and amazing scene...I have never seen a bird make holes like that before! (would love to have that piece of wood for a cane!) :)
