I just purchased my first filters (other than basic UV filters) and had a play today. I bought 2 Tiffen 0.6 ND Graduated B&W filters (2 different sizes for 2 of my lenses). This is the difference they make. The first pic is without the filter, the 2nd one is with the filter. No post processing has been done other than converting to .jpg and resizing.

Currently just a P&S, but watch this space.

Nice examples, thanks. The graduated filters certainly improve the sky images, IMHO.
