I am posting this as a heads-up for anybody who is not familiar with Raw Therapee or who tried it in the past and dismissed it as too slow. RT is a free RAW converter, an ongoing project, and version 2.1 has just been released. It is now as fast as any other converter I’ve used (my setup – XP/SP2, P4/3.0Ghz, 1.0 Gb RAM) and has added some great features. Those that really impressed me are:

The quality of the demosaicing algorithm. You have a choice between two, EAHD and HPHD, the latter being faster. Both give superb resolution of fine detail. Below is a comparison I did. The crops are 200% and no sharpening was done in any of the converters.

Highlight recovery. Again, a choice of two. Color Propagation is similar to Bibble in that an attempt is made to reconstruct the color of the highlight – sometimes with success, sometimes less so. Luminance Recovery is like ACR in that false color is avoided by equalizing the channels to produce grey tones.

Brightness adjustment in either RGB or Lab space. Curves tool for both.

Color adjustments (hue and saturation) and NR in Lab space.

As I said, RT is a work in progress, so what does it still lack? First, it is not color managed so all output is written only to sRGB space without an embedded profile. However, when you open the image in a CM application you can easily assign the sRGB space. Second, it doesn’t have batch capability.

RT is free, but its author receives donations. I sent him one in the hope that it will help to enable him to advance the project.

Free or otherwise, I think it is an admirable piece of work and worth taking a look.

From a member with 800+ posts since 2005? Doubt it. This is just a review of a product, which happens to be a free one.

Nice. Hope the author keeps improving the program and it becomes another great program like (or better than) RSE. Thanks for sharing.

Looks interesting, but Win only :(
Just came across Raw Photo Processor (external link) (OSX only ;)).
If you'ld like, I could run the same RAW file through it for comparison?
It is color managed, and offers the possibility to export a 16bpc Lab tiff. UI is pretty cluncky still...

Yeah, I downloaded and played with it briefly a few days ago... seems much faster over previous versions... This is one of those free ones I mention to Nikon users who don't have access to a RAW processor without paying for one.

Okay, gave it a go with a few different Raw converters:

First off: I've only downloaded RPP today, so haven't had time to experiment with it (this is the second image I've converted). The User Interface is *not* completely straightforward...

In all Raw converters I clicked 'neutral' on the box below the 'Saga' Logo.

The 'total image' in the OP looks rather 'HDR' in comparison what the Raw converters I tried put out. I like the 'more natural' versions better...
If you put contrast and saturation a bit higher, it comes very close to DPP color wise, which is very good IMO...

Setitngs used: (There is no sharpening option)

Result: The Grill comes out fairly well, but the line under it goes haywire...
Don't know what causes that, but I'll ask the developer (I'll probabely send him a link here ;))
Edit: Seems to be a known issue, allthough he's never seen it this bad... He'ld like to see the Raw file, so I referenced this thread ;)

Raw Developer: (Trail version, sorry for the watermark, Sharpening and NR off)

VueScan (Yep, the good old Hamrick (external link) scanner software)

Some similairities appear between software: Vuescan is pretty close to UFRAW (AHD) (but a lot better color wise), while RPP is fairly close to UFRAW (VNG).
DPP obviously uses some color noise surpression: If I remove color noise in Raw Developer, it comes closer to DPP.

Seems like RawTherapee HPHD does very well indeed!

Edit: What *is* the actual grid: Is it a grid, or is it straight lines? If it's straight lines, Raw Therapee does best, if it's a grid, I'd say UFRAW (VNG) comes closest!

They are straight lines, horizontal plastic strips. This link to another comparison might be of interest:

Personally, I'm quite pleased with RT and once it has color management and batch processing it may become my premier tool. Nice price too.

There is a new version of RPP, which pretty much solves the previous issue...
It also offers some nice Monochrome settings.
Looks better (but RawTherapee still does a better job with the lines):

A new beta is out on the forum page. A new demosaicing algorithm called NLM but run really slow on my computer, the image is a bit smoother than HPHD. I wonder what is the strength on this NLM?
