Lots of motion blur or camera shake.

You did not have bad lighting if you were able to get this at an ISO of 200!

Bump the iso to 800 and you would have more than enough shutter speed to overcome camera shake and motion blur.

The composition and framing is very intersting... The colors are great too...but like Taygul says, the ISO is key to low light, and no flash concert venue photos...

I saw Steve Miller back in 1971... Took a bunch of school friends from PA to NYC for some shows... We saw him at the Fillmore down by NYU... Leo Kottke on guitar, opened for Steve... I still listen to their stuff...

Yep, even a D60 does well at ISO 800...
You could also watch your technique: 1/30 isn't garantueed to give a sharp image with a 50mm lens, but you could get better results...

Pity really, 'cause apart from the blur it's not bad...

I found Steve Miller's presentation very difficult to photograph ... he had his people spread out to maximize distance between them and the lighting wasn't excessive, which for the casino is totally unnecessary. But boy, has he changed his look ... here's one I got of him in September, 2005:

Thanks for all your input. Dwight, your pic is amazing. I did experiment with the shutter speed and aperature a little. I also had two lenses with me; EF 50mm f/1.8 and EF17-40mm f/4L.

The two below were shot w/ the 50mm at 1/60, f/2.5 and 1/90, f/2.8 respectively. I will post a the third in another post so as to not exceed the max upload rules.

I wished I had shot at higher ISO, but after a few double vodka and tonics and the music, I just..........

Michael, I didn't put that up for some sort of comparison to your shots, just because he looks so, well, um, different! I get paid a lot of money to shoot Live Entertainment ... and I can't drink at the casino ... no alcohol allowed!

No worries. I did not take it that way. He does look much older than the two years between your and my pictures.

Pic # 2 in Post # 6 is your best of the lot... I'd crop it on top and in back of them... It should enlarge a little bit more without too much loss of sharpness...

Hey Michael, you're not shooting full manual are you? If so, may I ask why on earth you're not at f/1.8 with the 50mm, your exif shows f/2.5-2.8 ???

This too was my first concert, XTI with a 50mm f/1.8 at ISO 400 1/200-1/320th:

Thanks John. Below are the results of your advice. Better? I have about 35 more to wade through, but it looks like if they are not at least 1/90 shutter, they are too blurry and/or soft. I had not noticed the reflection off of the bassman's watch before.

Problem with a lot of these shots is, that the focus is not on the subject, but on the foreground somewhere...
Did you use AiServo or OneShot AF?

The one time I used a D60 (when my 10D was in repair), I found it had a very hard time getting accurate (if any) AF in these circumstances... An that's in OneShot. So I'd imagine AiServo would be pretty much useless...

We occasionally crop our work after some feedback... Rene' has encouraged me to do a trim here and there in the past too...

For example; Rene' and many others prefer a 2:3 ratio...
I however, use Photoshop for my traditional crops... It offers trim ratios of 3x5, 4x5, 4x6 etc...

I didn't notice the reflection off the watch the first time... Only after a later review did it become more noticable... With the crop/enlargement it's slightly more evident...

It's interesting, cause usually it's a light reflection from either the surface of the lens, or from the filter into the inside of the lens...
