Hi Guys,

Last weekend I had the chance to go and take photo at Oran Park. most of my photos were panning and some not, also I only had my 17-85 mm lens
( yes I know I need a longer lens but the cash cow a little low) the photos here I have cropped any ideas for next would be nice this was my very first race days & hope to do lots more. Enjoy

very nice... but I would just put the copyright in the bottom right hand corner and make it the same size so its the same in all the pics.

Yeah. I liked the pictures but the bright green and the size of the Copyright really took away from the main focus of the pictures.

The only advice I can give, as I'm new to this, is to reduce your shutter speed a little when panning - 1/500" is a little fast and reducing it will give a greater sense of speed by blurring the background and the wheels, and it also makes the bike and rider stand out more.

Other than #5 being oof, the rest are good.

Here's a shot I took, panning at 1/160" but the speed of the bike will determine how slow your shutter speed can go, combined with your panning technique, while keeping the bike and rider sharp. I did have IS when taking this but hopefully it illustrates the point of having a lower shutter speed.

Hope this helps - I've learnt so much from this forum.

WOW! I have to say that the copyright is BRIGHT, I needed sunglasses to even get past it, do yourself a small favor, and this will go a long way into making your stuff look much more pro, than the 'i am no way a pro' message that your photo's send out. Small and Simple!, Loose the 3D Bevel, and the awful GREEN, just go for plain white or black, you can splash out on a slight soft shadow as well, but nothing more, and is MA84au, a company name? you would come across a lot better with either a website address or just your name, I am sorry but the copyright you have takes EVERYTHING away from the images.

As for the images, considering you are using a standard kit lens, they are pretty good, I take it you were using AF Servo, and that you are also on Shutter Priority mode, if not, try it, and up the shutter speed to 1/200 sec, the lens will just about handle it if you have the light, and in Australia I would hope you do, and what you loose on the camera you can always make up for in Lightroom or Bridge, Keep it up!, but please do something about the text.

Sorry Guys for bright green copyright as you can see I have fix again sorry I hope it's a lot better.

Thanks for the kind words Everyone & also for the tips I will diff try them out next time. it was a great for see what I could do there and also get better spot for taken photos next time.

Good pictures, one other tip, try to place your self with the sun behind your back, that lens will do a better job if you set your "lighting right"

Some good shots there.. agree 1/125 is the way with I.S. obviously. Oran Park is great track but friend took a great pic using a wide angle lens on the final turn (the big sweeper) looks great when all the drivers (or riders in this case) are together.

I can't think of any of the Moto photog's I know that actually use IS... I would suggest not worrying about IS and simply working on your panning technique. It's something that comes with practice. Body position is important for panning... you want your shutter to fire when you have swung the camera so it's in front of you. Sounds simple but many shooters I see get themselves all contorted trying to pan. Increase your keep rate by working your way to slower shutter speed start at 640 f8 and work your way down the speed scale each lap.

Fast glass isn't a big deal outside... quality millimeters is. 70-200 f4 will get the job done for close stuff and 400 5.6 for longer shots. Add the 1.4x TC and now you have an arsenal that will work great for these shots. In the mean time think about shooting the places that can give you a neat background that compliments the limited focal range of your lens. Look for opportunities that are interesting with multiple bikes in frame. Cropping can work somewhat but you can see as you blow them up they tend to get softer.

Wow Dave your photo look great mate and jeffbmw your photos are Great too. I will def remember some of the setting you guys have said & used next time I'm at the track
I know that I need a big & faster lens thats next on the list to do.

Thanks Mate I just can not wait to the next race. on the panning front I need to work on it. most of my pics I was follow the rider but I was not out to have the back ground looking like it was fast and the bike not. I probly should had a go next time. here one I took with my old camera it's not on the track but you can see that I got the panning happen.
