A couple from a wedding last week. The groom is 6' 8" tall. There were stage lights on the alter, but he is so tall that his head was above where the lights hit. For the formals, I had to mount one of my 580EX's on a light stand with an umbrella to light his face. I found it hard to crop the shots without making him look "cramped".

In the first shot, he got wax on his had from lighting the unity candle and they are trying to clean it off during a song.

Thanks Jim!! I have never posted anything here before. My B&G's seem to like my work, but they aren't professionals, so I was a little leary.

This was actually taken with natural light and midnight sepia added is CS2 with some dodging and burning as needed. I was able to backoff the opacity of the filter to where I liked it. I had my two 580EX's on lightstands with umbrellas and took 2 shots of each formal: one with and one without flash. Some formals looked better with flash and some looked better with natural light. It wasn't the prettiest of alters, so I was a little concerned with the background.

yeah they are good shots. you cannot beat natural light IMO if theres enough of it.
well done. i really need to get a 580ex for these type of situations so i can trigger my 430ex wirelessly.

keep posting. :D

I love them both! I am really in love with these shots... I really wish I was there! The color the contrast is awesome! good work!

I wish I could take a class in photoshop! I need to take classes this weekend immediately. I love what people do in photoshop and I wish I could... I know it takes practice which i will probably continue to do on my own...

#2 is nice. A smile would have been better IMO. I think the alter is quite nice- I`ve seen worse.

I tried to get her to smile, but it was the end of the formals and I think she was smiled-out. Whenever she knew I was taking a picture, she stopped smiling. I don't know if she just wanted a serious look or what. She has a beautiful smile in all of the candids.

You are seeing the only pretty part of the alter. It was more of a stage. This church has a lot of music during its services, so they have a large open alter to make room for the instruments. I did like the fact that the minister performs the service with his back to the audience and the B&G are facing out.

Nice work Bob :D

My advice with shooting big and tall groom: don't mess with them. They are bigger than you (well, me, anyways!) :p

Seriously, there isn't that much you can do and there's no magic formula. Just don't crop too tightly and it looks a bit better. If you can, get a few shots of the B&G sitting, it won't be as apparent. Get him to sit behind the bride, get pictures of them in stairs with the bride on a higher step (use your imagination for composition and posing ;)), etc... You can also dig a hole for him to step into !

Joking aside, you may (and probably should) try to make the B&G look as nice as possible together in your pictures, but don't forget that it's part of reality: he's a big guy! You don't have to change that!

Big tall grooms are always hard to shoot unless u have a big, tall bride. when the height difference is too much, u cant get any close up couple shots that work. u have him bend over and he has tension in his poses or a sore back haha.
i think the dreaded sit down shots are called for or some photographers even bring some boxes for the bride to stand on.
