I have a panoramic picture that I took out over the Yosemite Valley and I've suddenly realized that I know NOTHING about how to get digital prints. I considered just going to Samy's to find out...but I get kinda turned off since they tend to become condacending (purposely or not) and I already know I'm totally ignorant, I don't want to rub salt into the (ego)wound.

Anyway, back on topic. The image I took is 11867x2240 pixels. What would be the "best size" (with regards to image quality) print?

Please go easy on me...

If that picture is really sharp and exposed right , at that size it will print at 39.5 x 7.5 inch
at 300 dpi ,, you could easily go double print size to approx 80 x 15 inch at 240 dpi , the larger print would retain the same detail as the smaller one , well to the eye the difference would be hard to pick .

On the Cambridge In Colour (external link) web site, there's a resolution calculator. For somebody with 20/20 vision, it suggests:
350 ppi when viewing at 25cm
175 ppi when viewing at 50cm
87 ppi when viewing at 1m
18 ppi when viewing at 5m

Obviously the size you print it at and the distance you look at it are connected. So let's try a couple of combinations. Your image is 11,867x2,240 pixels. So it would print to:
39.5" x 7.5" at 300 ppi
79" x 15" at 175 ppi
and very very very big at smaller resolutions!

With an image this size, I don't think you're going to be sticking your nose up against it. So 175 ppi is probably going to be OK, which give you a print 79" x 15". Or you could do 56" x 11" at 200 dpi. You get the idea.

PS Can we see it?

Thanks for the info, Stewart. The original file size is too big to post, but I tried putting it up on Flickr and this is what I got...LOL

Ooh, Glacier Point, lovely. It's the most awesome viewpoint I have ever seen. I'd love to have something like that on my wall. (Hope the weather is good when I go back to Yosemite in September...!) Thanks.

BTW, did you know that you can post small thumbnails on POTN that link through to larger versions on your image-sharing site?

One that you can afford a frame for. ;)
