Something doesn't seem to be quite right with the focus of my new 70-200 f/4IS & I can't seem to put my finger on it. Does it appear to backfocus in the following pic? Exif: ISO 100, 200mm, f/4, 1/160, IS On

Try taking a photo of a street sign or something flat and post up a high-res version.
Is it just this one picture or all your images? My 70-200 seems to be front focussing ever so slightly so I'll be sending it back to Canon for calibration.

Is it just in this one shot, or are you seeing it in all of your shots?

This was my first day of shooting with the lens and the best example I could find where it was most obvious. I'll look for some others to post.

If you didn't use a tripod for this shot it's useless to test against it. You move, flowers move.

Pick something immobile and use a tripod.

For shots like you posted, you can't shoot with razor thin DOF and expect good results. I'm guilty of it alll the time. Shooting too wide open to get usable DOF. Bump the ISO and stop 'er down a bit in real world.

But back to the test, use a tripod...

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

Second one looks okay.
Like cosworth said: thin DoF, so if you use OneShot AF *make certain* you (and the subject) don't move after focus lock...

Thanks for the comments. FYI I was using AI Servo & * button for focus, so I thought the camera would continually refocus and track the object if it moved slightly.

Within limits, yes.
Camera has to notice you moved though ;)

Look pretty darn sharp to me, on all of them. Sure a thing dof is a b*tch to nail handheld.Like others have said use a tripod of you want to test sharpness.:)

It looks as if there is some pixel-peeping going on here, especially on that helicopter.

they all look fine to me. i think you definitly overanalaysed the first shot. the flower, you, or the camera could have moved ever so slightly and caused that, all the rest are spot on.
