I am at the moment unsure what to do, I have a 100-400L lens but like the look of the sigma 120-300 f2.8.

I can only afford one or the other, but which one.

Advice welcome.

I have both. What do you want to shoot and do with it?

Are you using a tripod or monopod mostly?

Hands down 120-300 f2.8. It's slightly better than the 70-200 f2.8 IS optically and slightly inferior to the 300f2.8 IS. It's an amazing and versatile lens, and it loves a monopod.

would the 120-300 f2.8 work with a TC of any type without too much of an IQ/AF impact? as that will give you the reach then aswell of the 100-400 with the same/or better IQ

With a 1.4x, it becomes a 420mm f4, so it's still a stop faster than the zoom IS lens (400mm f5.6). IQ is still at a very high level with the TC on the EX. But it really needs a monopod whereas the 1-4IS doesn't.

Isn't the quality of the lens more important than his look???

Bad choice of words.

I was thinking about the TC option with the 120-300 I have read the IQ is still good with the TCs.

You can see they are similar in length with the zoom extended to 400mm, but they are drastically different in weight (95oz v. 55oz):

So, based on ICees reply of using a monopod mostly, the answer is get the 120-300 with a 1.4x TC :)

Heh, but what do I know, only had my DSLR about 5-6 weeks or so
