EF 100mm f/2.8 macro USM or EF-S 60mm f/2.8
Please help. I simply can not decide between the two. I already have 18-55mm and 50 1.8, planning to buy 10-22mm and 70-200 4L IS and one of those two macro. So... which one should I get?

P.S. sorry for my bad english :o:)

Do you want to shoot bugs or flowers?

Bugs (and other things that move) - 100mm macro
Flowers (and other things that don't move) - 60mm macro

Then the 100mm (gives you a greater working distance)

I was reading here about 60mm, and everyone said that it is super sharp. Is that also the case with 100mm?

They are both outstanding lenses. The only difference is that the 100mm offers more working distance (grater distance between the lens and the subject). Thus, for things like bugs, the greater working distance lets you stay further back and not frighten the bugs off.

Thanks everyone for answers :)
Also i was wondering, beside macro photos, which is more useful in everyday photography?

fresharoma,
Welcome to the forum :)
Both lenses are sharp.
The 100mm f/2.8 fits on many more Canon camera models (all EOS cameras), the 60mm f/2.8 only fits on cameras that take the EF-s lenses.
The 100mm f/2.8 gives more distance between lens and subject then the 60mm f/2.8 (really helps with macro bug photos).
The 60mm f/2.8 is smaller and lighter then the 100mm f/2.8
Both lenses are good, get the one you like :)

Thank you for the welcome :)
Yes, the fact that 60mm goes only on camera with EF-S is a minus. And i would have to be a lot closer to the subject. Since I will be getting 10-22 (also only EF-S mount :( ) and 70-200 , will this (100mm) be a good combination?

fresharoma,
It certainly could be, but that depends on you :) The 100mm f/2.8 can be a great head portrait lens with your camera (or more if you step farther away) and can be used in many other ways like landscapes etc.. but remember its a 100mm lens ;)

Here is a photo I took with a 1.6 DSLR (Canon 10D) with the 100mm f/2.8 lens

I think I will get 100mm, mostly because of the distance from the object.
And the fact that on my 400D body it will be 160mm should not bother me?

For general use on a 400D, the 60 mm is a better lens than the 100 mm, as the 100 mm is a little longish for general use, like portraits and landscapes.

The WD, i.e., the distance from the front lens to the object at 1:1, is about 10 cm with the 60 mm, and about 14 cm for the 100 mm.

IQ of the 60 mm is slightly better than that of the 100 mm, but I doubt you'll notice the difference in real life shooting.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

Oh boy, now what  . Yes, I was a bit worried that 100mm would be to long for my 400D. But... if I someday change the camera... I just dont know. The 100 (160mm) range is coverd in 70-200mm, and 60mm is something I dont have... I am confused :)

Try them both out, at a store near you, and decide then.

IQ-wise, they're both good, and so what if you would get a FF camera? You could still use the 60 mm with an extension tube on the FF cam in that case, or sell it. It will keep its value well.

Kind regards, Wim
