I thought that f9.0 would have been plenty to get this sharp. Am I wrong (well obviously - but whadayathink?)

This would throw off your exact focus point @ f-9. I've found that to be true for me. The DOFocus is about this >< wide. Once you're set up with general focal length, aperature & focus, etc, it's best to focus by moving toward & back from the subject - don't screw around with changing @ the lens if you're in MF which I usually use. If AF, then you lock it when you depress the shutter button, but that doesn't mean that you don't have time to move before it goes off! FrankC - 20D, RAW, Manual everything...
