Hi all,

I just opened a smugmug account and I have a cropping question. Say I take a picture of a soccer game and I capture 3 kids in the shot but I only want one. Should I crop out the other two kids before loading the pic to Smugmug or do I let the consumer do the cropping?

For presentation purposes, I like to crop out the kids that I do not want but I'm afraid if I do that, I will make the image to small for printing for sizes larger than 4x6. Am I making sense?

Should I crop out what I don't want in the picture before loading?

Thanks for your help.

Karman

Let them do it! Heck, sometimes they might want their friends in the shot as well.

What if you only have say half of a body? Do you crop that little bit out since you know no one will want half a body in the picture? Just trying to figure out how much work I should do on the pics before loading them.

Thanks again,
Karman

I say do it yourself.
I find that you get a much better shot if you crop and sharpen it yourself.
Smugmug has a L size of 800px wide max. If you upload an image larger than this Smugmug will reduce the image down both in size and quality to fit the L image size. (of course you can still use the original size)
When i first used smugmug i noticed quite a lot of my full size images looked horrible at L size. I later discovered that a lot of others felt the same.

Don't crop or sharpen files to be uploaded to Smugmug.
1) They can can crop the way they want online.
2) Files that go to print are automatically sharpened.

Here's a code to save $5 on your account,

I do the same thing. Saves me time and sometimes results in more sales.
